I just received an email from Ford encouraging me to take my Mav to the trained Tech's at my local dealer for service I can trust, accompanied by the following photo. I'm not much of a mechanic, but I don't think you're supposed to crank on the lug nuts without the car up on a jack.

The advantage is, they break it, they fix it.

If you have a good relationship with your dealer - certainly take it to them.

Although, I rotate my own tires & do my own oil changes. Yes, final torque tightening should be done with vehicle on ground. Also want to slightly loosen them before lifting.

The picture shows a Tech doing it correctly. Many tire shops don’t.
With an impact wrench I normally don't loosen the lug nuts before lifting, and I have seen many shops lifted the cars before loosen the lug nuts, then using an impact wrench on the lug nuts to remove the tires.

Bottom line, dealer only ever gets the privilege of having my truck if it's for warranty work. Otherwise, I avoid any dealer like the plague. They usually end up messing up more stuff while it's there...

The big-box multi outlet owned Ford store in my locality? Absolutely not!! After they could not properly diagnose my 2023 Explorer Timberline and it took over a month for them to finally figure out where the low speed front end rattle was coming from on a brand new vehicle. When it came to trade in time, I went to the locally owned multi outlet Ford store where the owners actually live in the community and got my Maverick from them. Service department is night and day different.

Did I have an issue with them? Sure, but the fact that the owners empower the employees to satisfy a customer meant that the issue was handled promptly, without an argument, and to my total satisfaction.

Our Bronco Sport was recalled to replace the battery with a new AGM. New battery is nice but they left both the positive and negative clamps completely loose.

Dealers are like any other businesses out there.
Some are really good, some average, some terrible.

There is no good reason to blindly trust any business, but assuming they are all bad without any experience doesn't seem rationale either.
Since warranty repairs are required to be performed at a dealership, it's probably a good idea to find one on the plus side of the scale.

Like many on the forum, I typically have avoided dealerships for most maintenance activities, but the dealer I bought the car from is one of the good ones, and their service department on the nitty software updates I've gone in for were very good experiences.

I just may reverse my trend and see how they do with scheduled maintenance activities.

My dealer lives here. His father owned the business and worked there. His mother was there, too. It is a family business and they own the Toyota dealership, too. I have been taking my RAV there for service since I got it and have no complaints. I even got a new tire there, because they were cheaper than the Michelin dealer. They have never given me reason to mistrust them.

Final torque tightening, that's the correct way
Not unless that air hammer can be set for shutoff at the proper torque!

New battery is nice but they left both the positive and negative clamps completely loose.
Years ago, the mechanic left a dangling hot wire while doing some work on my car--an Impala 40.

Accelerating onto the freeway, dangling wire followed Mr. Newton's laws and touched ground behind it.

So no spark for a moment.

Do you have any idea what a 400cid small block backfiring at full throttle sounds like???
😲

It blew 13" of tailpipe off, we measured later.

I hit the brakes for my freeway offramp, and it shorted forwards.

Blew the muffler open, and rotated the ruptured shell of it about 15 degrees.

I had two buddies BITD who had 400's, One in a 67 GTO and the other in 1970? Grand Prix! Awesome engines!

oddly, the '72 chevy 400 only had a two barrel carb, rather than a quadrajet. I think that the 402 (yes, they offered both!) big block had the quadrate, though.

Still, at 145 years old and about 150k miles, it left a 12 or 15 foot track of rubber from a start once . . .
