Old guy here. When radials first came out you could only rotate them front to back. Is this not the case anymore?

Industry standard is still the same. A decade or two ago they would cross the non drive tires. But that seems to have gone away.

I don't have my Mav yet, so no manual. No, you no longer have to keep 'em on the same side unless you have directional tires. I usually move the front straight back and cross the rears as I move them forward. Don't know what the book says.

Thanks will have to ask the dealer how they do it. Be shocked if they followed the manual. Once had a Toyota dealer tell me I needed tire rotation on a 2003 MR2. Car has directional tires plus different sizes front and rear they can't be rotated.

From the manual:

that's exactly what you always do unless the tire is directional, or front and rear aren't the same size.

I have definitely seen both here on MTC. Mostly directional, many winter tires and some all-season tires are directional.

Years ago...
You would also put the "Spare" tire in the mix.
Fronts to same side rears. Right rear to left front, left rear to spare position and spare to righr front.. 🤔

That (tried) to keep even wear on all the tires. Also keep the spare wheel from rusting up.
Which i failed to do in my old age...
Because of that i went looking for the Maverick...
Guess I lucked out on that mistake.. 😁😎

You're kidding, right?
Unless he drives a Corvette or something else with 4 unique tires, I sure hope he's rotating.

Maybe got that advice from a tire shop who's all too happy to sell more tires, more often?

No,check out Scotty kilmers podcasts.rotating was necessary for bia ply tires.not so much modern radials. Like I said I haven't rotated a tire in prolly 30 years and haven't noticed a need to.
I don't care what his podcast says. If you don't rotate tires you WILL have uneven wear. That isn't even debatable. On some cars you will end up replacing a pair significantly sooner without rotation. Many newer cars, especially in the luxury market use a fairly soft tire. Rotation is a cheap way to ensure getting more miles out of the tires. I would be curious what his logic is, but he is wrong either way.

What vehicle requires 4 unique tires?
