The drivers side door jam placard says it all ! Its misleading to call it a FULL size spare or worse, pay extra for one.

Here is a pic of a TRUE FULL size 17 inch spare.

Yes, I can’t believe I got dooped into paying extra for this STILL-UNDERSIZED mismatched China Bomb brand of a spare tire. I foolishly thought the tire itself might at least match the rest in brand/size as I selected the box during custom order. I still consider this spare a donut and the result of misleading cost-cutting B.S.

Sorry to hear you were mislead by Ford :

DO NOT BUY THE SO CALLED FULL SIZE SPARE FROM FORD !

Either live with the temp donut or buy a true FULL SIZE with a factory OEM sensor.

The rim I can tolerate being mis-matched, but not the tire (again, I paid more for something advertised as full size). I spent a fair amount of time under the Mav recently and plan to get a proper 225/65R17 for my hybrid XLT. And I’ll even balance it! My current spare from Ford was not balanced.

Check the measurements closely prior to replacing since some on this forum doing that said they had to cut off the puncture points in the spare wheel well for one to fit. They are there as a safety method to puncture the spare tire in a rear end collision and protect gas tank from what I understand. Good Luck

Look for folks that have a full set of Factory XL OEM 17 inch, balanced, with TPMS sensors, and ask if they will just sell you just one.

A mini donut is not bad for temp use and comes standard. Just do not fall for paying for a so called Full size spare when ordering.

so. there's normally a tire deflation device in there that prevents a ~29" tall tire like the Mav uses from fitting. I didn't engineer the thing, but I assume Ford wants the tire to go flat so that it'll crumple properly in a heavy rear-end collision.

did you remove the deflating spike?

Thanks—I probably saw some of those same posts about the teeth (they got undercoated with Fluid Film recently, along with the rest of the truck). At least some of those posts were AWD and 4k towing. I have the hybrid with “normal” tow package, and while I can’t speak for the other builds, I have a good 1.5 inches, maybe even 2 inches, before it hits the receiver. I had the spare tire dropped and out of the way while undercoating, and when I put it back up I pushed it fwd gently into the teeth so that the tread just kissed them. I could probably push fwd just a hair more too, without having to do anything to the teeth. But a 225/65R17 is ballpark about 1.3 inches larger than a “full size” spare of 215/60R17. If it’s THAT close, I’ll put on a used 225/65R17 but I’m not too worried about fitment. Heck, the OEM Continental tires count as used right out of the box, considering it only comes with 8/32 tread new anyway. A real tire would have about 12/32 new.

interesting. I'm not sure if it was a FWD or AWD model, but there was a thread a while back where someone tried to put a factory 225/65-17 on a steelie in there and the deflation spike was in the way.

Depends on your definition of 'Full Sized Spare'. Ford apparently means it's not a temporary spare (donut), with a 50 mph or 50 mile limitation.

The rim will not match, and the tire will still be slightly undersized. Wishful thinking would be along the lines it would be a perfect match to the other four tires, which sadly isn't the case. - Explains how the Hybrid comes with a 'full sized spare' at no charge.
Actually the steel wheel will match perfectly if you have an XL model, but the tire will be a size smaller. If you have an XLT or Lariat the wheel will not match, as the base XL wheel is used for the spare on all trims when the "full size" wheel and tire are included.

I bought the "full size" spare knowing the tire is smaller than the ones on the truck. It will work much better than a doughnut spare on the rough dirt ranch road I drive on.

If I want to put a larger tire on I already have a rim to do it. I think it's worth the $115 cost.

And I’d rather have the full sized spare if I needed one while pulling a trailer or being loaded. I see definite value.
