What if the 2-door Maverick had the same wheelbase & track, so the "footprint" was the same, just less cabin and a longer bed?

Pretty sure the two door thing has more to do with development costs than CAFE. If they really thought there was a cost justifiable need for a two door they would have just given it a longer bed to qualify for the lower MPG requirements and still met the size threshold. I'm willing to bet that the actual reason they didn't develop a 2 door is because it costs tens of millions of dollars to develop a 2 door version of the chassis, thousands upon thousands of man hours of design, FEA for crash testing and so on just add too much money to the development process which increases the cost of all versions. Ford got this one as cheap as they did by keeping the development process as simple as possible by making one chassis version (supercrew w/4.5ft bed) and keeping development contained to the 3 year timeline when most new models take 5-6 years to develop. This is probably also why you have fitment issues with some trim pieces (Speaker shroud on B&O equipped models, rattles in the dash, etc), it was designed to a price point and with a significantly condensed development timeline to save money and keep it cheap.

2-door trucks are not popular, it is really that simple.
I think it is just this. The only two-door trucks I see are work trucks. And even most work trucks nowadays are 4-door.

For every person on an internet forum claiming they would have bought a 2 door version there are 1,000 people out there who say they would never consider a 2 door. Just like manual transmissions and why they aren't very popular anymore, sure, you get people on forums and enthusiast sites pining for a manual and then they don't sell and the manufacturer spent millions of dollars developing the implementation for nothing.

Biggest problem with that is that Maverick is a low volume product. F-series has huge volume so they're able to profitably offer a variety of bed and cab sizes. Maverick doesn't have the economies of scale to do multiple configurations profitably. They're also selling all Mavericks they can build so there's currently no need to expand the lineup unless they significantly boost production.

Then you add in that, at least in the US, Maverick is primarily targeted at personal, not fleet use.

It's entirely possible for them to shrink the cab and stretch the bed to keep the same footprint, there's just currently not a good business case for it.

Plus, if they make Maverick too capable, then that would convince customers to downsize from F-150 and Ranger..

So true, remember back when most guys insisted that a car has to be a 2 door, 15 years later they all had to have 4 door trucks, so that's what we have. If the Maverick was offered like the picture above, with a bench seat & longer box, being a single guy I would have went for that version, but I am finding that like most people the 4 door truck is most usable.
