Yes, the deformation of the Front Seats (as mentioned) is still considered a "crumple zone".
In the overall, crash-worthiness of a modern vehicle.
Until another form is found. We will have to live with it.

This crash, was a high-speed frontal impact. The deformation of the Mavericks' roof is a clear sign, of the sudden stop of forward movement.

Ford Maverick So sad, so preventable smh Tx crash 3-17-2026_Maverick

This could have easily caused the rear passenger to break their neck.. 😧
Since, there is NO air bag on the back of the front seat..
And the seatbelt, being the only way to stop any forward movement. 🤔

This is just another example of just seconds of Poor Judgement...
And NO this is NOT an Accident.. 🤬

I taught defensive driving for many years. A cardinal rule: Do ANYTHING to avoid a head-on crash. If push comes to shove, take a glancing blow with your vehicle. The driver of the Buick was at "fault". Seems like a very wide roadway if you include the shoulders. It is possible the Buick just pulled into the oncoming lane and Mav driver had no time for any evasive action. Also, possible he had the possibility of avoiding or reducing the severity of the accident but was distracted by something else. Avoidable crash, perhaps by both parties.

Prayers for all involved and their families!🙏

I wonder if the driver's seat ended up in the back row of the Maverick?
This was my first thought reading this, we did see someone here post about the front seats ending up crushing right into the backseats in a crash. Luckily in that case there was no backseat passengers.

It was not weak hardware.🙄
This is been happening for years.
The internet has given it far more exposure than one 3 minute. segment on the evening news.

According to auto manufacturers it is intentionally designed to collapse as it does.
Believe it or not the video below is from 9 years ago. Give me a little time and I will find the engineer testimony that this is what it's supposed to do.

This is what it looks like with a child sitting behind you when the front seat back collapses. The adults head smashes into the child's face.
I took screenshots from the video.
I never knew that this was a situation that could happen and I'm utterly appalled that it has not been corrected.

Here's a fairly recent story out of Oregon we're an infant child was killed because of it.

On average 50 children a year are killed because of collapsing front seats.

Not because of replacement bolts🙄
Learned something new. Thanks.
Edit: I read some more about it. The stat I found said about 50 children a year are severely injured or killed because of it. Yet a CBS investigation from 2021 found 100 people over a 30 year span had been killed or severely injured. I wonder if the size of the front seat occupant plays any part in it. I say that because I am 6'1", 235 and I could see where my size would put more stress on the rod than a 165 lb person. I will continue to read up on it Glen, thanks again. In your original photo I had to enlarge it to see that the console lid is flipped up. I originally thought that was the seat bottom flipped up from coming unsecured to the floor. My bad.
EDIT 2: Your last link actually says the size of the front seat occupant plays a role in the seat failure. Maybe the NHTSA should require adding the seat back crash rating to the new car stickers.

It's a tough engineering tradeoff. If you make the seat back too strong you'll catapult the front row forward harder and faster. Possibly too quick for the airbags. Make it too weak and the rear occupants potentially suffer the consequences. If you must be in the back, sit in the middle and where a seat belt.

SO the lady in the Buick was in a hurry, but she'll be on time for her funeral.
Too bad she took another person with her.

I was sitting first in line stopped at a light in Phoenix. 3 lanes in each direction.
Behind me and to my right was a line of cars, most were likely getting on the freeway like me.
The far right lane to my right was clear and open to travel.
The light for both directions turned green.

Across the road was a driver in a Mercedes, who stomped on the skinny pedal to make a left turn in front of traffic that started to move on the green.
She had to cross 3 lanes of traffic to get into the road that had a large business.

She made it across 2 of the lanes as people had to stop for the moron, but a car coming down the right lane at about the speed limit of 35 didn't need to stop for the light that had just turned green proceeded to smack the Merc in the passenger side rear quarter and it spun off the road into a field as the lady in the other car bailed out onto a grass field as it rolled downhill into a ravine.
I think she had burns from the airbags.

At least 5 cars pulled over to provide witness statements, and I would have loved to tell that driver what a F$%^&^Ig idiot she was. I wonder if she got slapped. I'm sure she got cited.

The Buick driver that caused the accident noted in this thread deserved what she got.
The people in the Maverick didn't.
