These aftermarket intakes don’t really change anything, other than the noise level, which in turn makes the engine “sound more powerful”

I was involved in evaluating this type of modified intake years ago. Customers were claiming miraculous improvements on the engine I was Chief Engineer on at the time, and we were getting beat up on from field service. To make a long story short, we couldn’t duplicate improvements on the dynamometer, or on test trucks. Didn’t make squat of a difference in fuel economy or acceleration.

i evev flew to Dallas to do back to back A-B-A tests using a vocal customer’s personal truck, which we borrowed and fully instrumented, using lab grade instrumentation and confirmed fuel economy using drain and weigh. We put close to 1000 miles on the customer truck.

Results…no diffference…nada.

the telling comment was when we returned the truck to the owner….”Just listen to the power”.

he was confusing sound with power, and had no idea how to actually measure fuel economy.

The whole intake mod was a placebo effect on actual power and fuel economy.

The aftermarket made pretty good money selling pretty garbage, though.

So you are telling me that when I took my dad's 78 Pontiac and flipped the round air filter cover over, it was not actually faster, just sounded faster? LOL

In the racing world yeah I’d build in and test various intake systems.

Did any one notice that K&N and S&B or any other Knock off Aftermarket intake system has not once gone to a known trusted second party Tuning shop and provided certified numbers and charts showing their breather system gains ?
Thats right not one !

Now if you properly installed your Cold air intake then had a shop reprogram your fuel air system FOR the specific intake breather system to get more power I’d bet a six pack of cheap beer you’d get at best 25-35 HP more.
And the only way to use that power would be to push the gas pedal way down KILLING your mileage.

Or but not both they could tune for economy and try and better Ford’s tuning.
But I doubt you could get an average increase in economy better than 10%
If it was there to get FORD would have done that.

Not too keep this sillyness going but the S/B intake adds barely any additonal intake noise whatsoever- You can hear a little more whisper of the BOV-

True/Dat- I do enjoy the added mid/range oomph from the S/B but it chokes out a bit after that with the stock downpipe/turbo/exhaust just like the OEM version - For all the talk here the S/B unit is barely louder than at all over the tiny stock complete intake system.

Liking the S/B with 91/Octane at elevation here in the mountain west- Would really like to get sport mode via Forscan at some point but the largest issue is the transmissions just shifting when it wants to at times instead of when its told.

Definitely. Sound is extremely persuasive especially when it comes to a vehicle. It's like the power of suggestion, if you will.
