These aftermarket intakes don’t really change anything, other than the noise level, which in turn makes the engine “sound more powerful”

I was involved in evaluating this type of modified intake years ago. Customers were claiming miraculous improvements on the engine I was Chief Engineer on at the time, and we were getting beat up on from field service. To make a long story short, we couldn’t duplicate improvements on the dynamometer, or on test trucks. Didn’t make squat of a difference in fuel economy or acceleration.

i evev flew to Dallas to do back to back A-B-A tests using a vocal customer’s personal truck, which we borrowed and fully instrumented, using lab grade instrumentation and confirmed fuel economy using drain and weigh. We put close to 1000 miles on the customer truck.

Results…no diffference…nada.

the telling comment was when we returned the truck to the owner….”Just listen to the power”.

he was confusing sound with power, and had no idea how to actually measure fuel economy.

The whole intake mod was a placebo effect on actual power and fuel economy.

The aftermarket made pretty good money selling pretty garbage, though.

So you are telling me that when I took my dad's 78 Pontiac and flipped the round air filter cover over, it was not actually faster, just sounded faster? LOL

In the racing world yeah I’d build in and test various intake systems.

Did any one notice that K&N and S&B or any other Knock off Aftermarket intake system has not once gone to a known trusted second party Tuning shop and provided certified numbers and charts showing their breather system gains ?
Thats right not one !

Now if you properly installed your Cold air intake then had a shop reprogram your fuel air system FOR the specific intake breather system to get more power I’d bet a six pack of cheap beer you’d get at best 25-35 HP more.
And the only way to use that power would be to push the gas pedal way down KILLING your mileage.

Or but not both they could tune for economy and try and better Ford’s tuning.
But I doubt you could get an average increase in economy better than 10%
If it was there to get FORD would have done that.

Not too keep this sillyness going but the S/B intake adds barely any additonal intake noise whatsoever- You can hear a little more whisper of the BOV-

True/Dat- I do enjoy the added mid/range oomph from the S/B but it chokes out a bit after that with the stock downpipe/turbo/exhaust just like the OEM version - For all the talk here the S/B unit is barely louder than at all over the tiny stock complete intake system.

Liking the S/B with 91/Octane at elevation here in the mountain west- Would really like to get sport mode via Forscan at some point but the largest issue is the transmissions just shifting when it wants to at times instead of when its told.

Definitely. Sound is extremely persuasive especially when it comes to a vehicle. It's like the power of suggestion, if you will.

Not to wake up a dead thread, but I was looking hard at the new S&B for 25-26 models, and I love the Look but would be hugely disappointed if the sound wasn't there like you all are saying! I've got a Thermal R&D catback and GFB BOV coming from Panda, and I was going to purchase the CAI for looks and noise, just like the other two items because it's fun! could care less if it goes a ton faster. SO, if the S&B doesn't sound powerful, what CAI does? Would prefer dry media with better cleaning efficiency...

Oil your regular air filter like they do on cold air intakes.

Hey I heard you get like 10 more horsepower from putting a bag of sugar in your gas tank. I just thought I'd give you great suggestion since you gave one to me that seemed a little smart assed.

The only thing a higher flow intake can do is allow the turbo to spool slightly quicker. It will not/ cannot improve MPG. An exhaust can allow the turbo to spool quicker too. It will not improve MPG.
I’ve been curious about all these claimed numbers myself and thank gawd this thread exists to have really broke most of it down.
This is the most concise comment for all the claims by manufacturers of “air intake systems” and car back exhausts.

The clincher is when you add it all up. I asked search assist about the claimed numbers for afe rebel exhaust and what was telling were the words “as tested on their in house dyno.”🙄 Which, admittedly without bothering now to look up exactly, is where I’m guessing the numbers for the only dyno sheet for the afe cold air intake for the Maverick came from, and those numbers are different from what is claimed by them on the webpage where the CAI is listed. The dyno sheet numbers show only 13hp and 8ftlbs of torque while the page shows 12hp and 14ft lbs of torque.

More evidence points to cat back exhaust systems not producing any gains: SW exhaust cat back claims no power gains, neither does the exhaust Ford performance just released.

From the Ford Racing Parts own page, it reads: “Ford Performance Sport exhaust systems are uniquely designed and tuned to provide an aggressive and throaty high-performance sound that is sure to enhance your driving experience”

ENHANCE DRIVING EXPERIENCE!😆

Engine noises!

To wrap it up, I would agree with what you said about making the turbo spool faster, as my truck seems to accelerate slightly better, just enough to notice, same with shifts, which could be explained by the quicker spooling of the turbo.

The more solid throughput of the exhaust structure does also make the turbosmart BOV active all throughout the RPM range whereas before it seemed to only happen around 3000 RPM or more, AND it is more audible, which I do love!

I will also say I noticed the truck feel nimbler likely because it shed at least 12-15 lbs from the stock system vs the MRT street race system so there is less weight flopping around the underside. The exhaust I bought isn’t very loud, but the note is really pleasant!

I've got to say--you must be extremely sensitive to handling if you notice a difference of 15lbs. of sprung weight down low on a 3800 lb truck.

Ikr. Idk. It’s nothing earth shattering and yeah I said wth too. It’s not like I felt it the entire drive, literally just at the bottom of the driveway where it meets the street. That’s y I assume it had to do with the weight being at the very far corner and that it sits on rubber isolators and swayed with that movement because otherwise no it’s definitely not noticeable. Idfk nevrmind could just be coincidental idk to what🤷🤣

Im gonna punt my wifes boob out of the window while on a road trip.... Could use less weight flopping around over there. Plus itll feel MO NIMBLER.
