I have '22 hybrid that has been a gem to own and my fuel economy is great but a problem has recently cropped up and i am not impressed with the local dealers techs so I'm reaching out.
I have 50K miles on my truck and recently i noticed a shaking while accelerating onto the highway. this has never happened before but now it won't go away. any hard acceleration or hill climbing feels like I'm missing a cylinder. it does not happen while in electric mode or at steady speeds, even up to 75+ mph.
I thought maybe bad gas, clogged fuel injector or even a thrown wheel weight. I had the tires balanced, filled up with premium and added fuel injector cleaner. Nothing has changed after 2,000 miles.
Any GOOD ideas?
Thanks

It is likely that one or both of your CV half shafts are failing.

thanks for that option but would that only happen with ICE ? I dont get that shudder when in electric mode, but maybe not enough torque to cause the problem?

What they said is possible.

Are there any new noises?

There are more than a few faulty engine dampers reported. But with the shake you usually hear a rattle and mostly right at the transition from gas/hybrid to electric only. Noticed when the engine stops. Or possibly on restart. 🤷🏻‍♂️

How bad is the shake? The 2.5L is using a higher-efficiency Atkinson cycle, which is pretty lumpy a lot of the time. There have been a few with broken mounts and a damper problem and a couple of other things, so it would be nice to get a better idea of what you think is bad. Maybe you have a failed plug or something, but that would throw an engine code...

I guess we will find out soon enough about this shaking; I'm taking it to shop that specializes in front end diagnosis. I dont know the name but my nephew is a body shop manager and has connections. Since its a new problem i would not blame it on the Atkinson cycle engine.
Thank you all for suggestions, I post the results in a few weeks
Happy trails.

My working theory is that there are a few things contributing to CV axle failures in hybrids:

Soft motor mounts to minimize NVH which allow the whole powertrain to shimmy under high load

Shock loads from ICE starting/stopping

CV axle operation angle

But I think the main factor is that these always see torque. All the torque for regen braking is transmitted back through the CV axles into the transmission to charge the battery. Then all that torque is released at 3MPH. Back, and forth.

I don’t think the electric motor has enough torque to cause it to be symptomatic. Maybe the vibration of the ICE running contributes as well.

I was a bit “matter of fact” in my first reply but the truth is, the way that you described the problem, combined with your initial attempts at diagnosis…

I’m sure you will get it figured out. And when you do, swing back here and let us know!

Well the verdict is in: 3 broken motor mounts. These things must be very low quality since I baby this truck in order to maximize fuel economy.
Yes, I am a member of the 800 mile club. actually 816 is my best so far but I have lots of over 700 miles tanks.
Thank you all for the suggestions and if it turns out that the motor mounts are not the problem i will be back with an update.

Thanks for the follow up!

I have always been under the impression that this shake/shudder was the entire powertrain moving and that this was actually causing the CV axle problems.

I love that I was wrong and learned from it!

well now I have a new update: The motor mounts have been replaced but the problem persists! The dealer admits that this a head scratcher and feels that the (pardon me if I get the terms wrong) that the flywheel vibration dampener is bad and needs to be replaced so there will be a three day wait for parts, two days to pull out the engine and electric motor and a lot of finger crossing.
Once again I am glad I have a transferable extended warranty because that will be my next step: transfer this warranty to the next owner.
I'm done with this truck.
I had a Tacoma before this and it looks like I will be going back to another one. I will miss the great fuel economy and smooth ride but I need something I can trust. Between the recalls, an ongoing electric issue that will require a new body harness (full interior removal and replace plus another week in the shop at the end of this month) stick a fork in me.
First and last Ford for me.

I have the same theory. A bad quality of the mounts contributing to CV axles failures in all Maverick Trucks.

Mine is a 2022 as well with 20k miles on it. I am experiencing the same thing. Took it in and they said the exhaust pressure sensor was broken...they fixed it but the shake remains.
