Don’t have a lot of faith in the dealer mechanics. I’m going to start a recording on my phone every time I start the truck and see if I can record the event. It would be impossible to fix or even guess what the cause is unless the mechanic can reproduce the problem. Thanks for your input.
Neither do I, but whatever you have going on needs to be diagnosed and fixed under warranty. The longer you let it continue the worse it will get and given the recalls, it's not worth the risk. Video evidence is helpful, but again, it has to be very specific. There are too many videos of someone recording a noise that show absolutely nothing helpful. Hopefully you can pinpoint it so they can fix it. Sorry this is happening to you :(

The dial is not nearly as awkward as the automatic lever in the dash shift I had in my 55 plymouth.

Actually looks kinda cool, you could use it without taking your hand off wheel and probably not accidentally shift into park instead of drive :D .

First mistake - swing across the street in our little Cul-de-sac to back into my driveway, turn shifter two clicks - lurch forward nearly into my neighbor's yard.
Backing out of a parking space - still rolling slowly, switch to Drive, engaged Park with a jolt. Even at minimal speed stopping nearly 4000 lbs with a little pawl can't be good.
I expect that over minimal speed park is locked out, don't intend to try it though.
I think we all have done this, it a learning curve

Thinking about it, there is no reason why the transmission control can't be incorporated into the dash instead of cluttering the center console. Put it within easy reach of the steering wheel and incorporate the 'stop/start' button with it  .

I'm glad this thread was posted because it made me better with the dial shifter. Last weekend I used some of the advice in here and twisted it left and right without thinking about it and even did an all the way left followed by a single right click to do a turn around w/o having to look down. Thanks fellers. (y)

Quote from the SAE magazine review of the 2024 Ranger:
'One more item customers preferred: The Ranger’s 10-speed transmission is operated by a lever rather than a rotary shifter'.

The ranger is an older model design, wait for the MY24.

Look first. Then shift. There, that wasn't so hard.
Can you imagine the complaints we'd hear if Ford built the Maverick with only a manual transmission? You mean I have to coordinate accelerator, clutch, and shifter simultaneously? Couldn't they invent something simplier?
A must like post. I want to type the words "look first" in font size 72 so bad.

The low profile and clean console area is nice. The auto park feature when turning the vehicle off (while in gear) or a door is opened (while in gear) are additional safety features I like. No roll away, run away dangers.

I drive a manual transmission Tacoma daily and only drive my wife's Mav on weekends. I struggle with that dial. I think it's because I'm used to the feel of which way a lever should go vs actually looking at it. I have to look at that dial position but I can feel the shifter position in my rig.
You can definitely look at the driver's info panel instead. Right there - P R N D L. Or once you've driven it enough, it's pretty intuitive. Because it is so easy to use, it is a lot easier to mis-shift than a traditional T-handle automatic.

I rented a van last year in the UK, Vauxhall or Nissan I think, the gearlever stuck out of the dash beside the steering wheel, needed a little push for the 1-2 shift, 3-4 & 5-6 shifts with the finger tips (RHD). Very easy to drive, had me wondering why cars can't be like that.

You have button shifters. You have rotary shifters. You have a whole variety of steering column shifters that work in different ways. You have floor shifters that come out of the console. My wife's Volvo has the world's weirdest automatic shifter, where you have to nudge it twice to get to drive. And now I understand that Teslas select the gear for you, or you swipe up or down on the center screen.

I think this is all a vast -insert your politics here- wing conspiracy by automotive collision shops to generate more business by creating more accidents.
