I stay back 2 seconds all the time, and don't drive right up the next guy's ass. I stay even further back from rock-chucking dumptrucks. Its a truck, and the upright windshield and frontend of a truck tends to cause stones to impact and not to just slide over the top. Over the years I've had 2 Rangers, and put 5 windshields in them over a million kms. This time I switched to a Maverick since the new Ranger is now much too big for my purposes. So far I've not had to fix anything on the Maverick except for 5 recalls and 6 small paint chips from rock hits. I recently had a large RedTail Hawk fly straight into my windshield and hit so hard that my rearview mirror was left dangling. I took a really close look at the windshield while I was cleaning all the guts off, and the windshield never even cracked. I think the thin windshield flexes and actually prevents some of the damage that other vehicles would get.

Have had to replace my windshield 3.5 times in not even two years since owning, from rocks smashing into glass. One of the times required me to have the pillar repainted. The .5 time was having to stop a crack from spreading from a rock that worked, but the crack remained, until another rock hit the glass.

This last time really pissed me off, as saw the hit happen, and the crack spread across the glass, There was a medium size truck in front of me, but not for at least 45 yards.

The way i see it:
1 time bad luck
2 time bad luck/coincidence
3 times starting to think theres some design aerodynamic issues going on
3.5. Enough is enough.
4. Really bad luck

Over the years when my windshield developed a crack, I didn't bother changing it out until it impaired the driver vision and wouldn't pass inspection. Following that pattern, I've only replaced two windshields in almost 50 years of driving (one a Honda Accord and the other a Genesis Coupe) No cracks yet on the Mav, and it has taken a couple of hits. The windshield on the Lariat is supposed to be "acoustic", so maybe that helps some?

I just had to change insurance companys because Hardford, and others are no longer selling policys in Florida. (home owner) so you can't bundle. I went to Progressive, and they charged me a increase above the quote because I had a claim for a windshield that was over 3 years ago on my last 2005 GMC Canyon. They go back 5 years.

I have had some crazy windshield experiences over the years.... the ones that are most irritating are the ones that you have no idea where the things that hit you came from.... I've had a couple of those.
When my Mav windshield got hit there was nothing near me at all. No vehicle or people within sight of me. It hit the very top edge of the windshield. An 1/8th inch higher and it would have simply chipped the roof edge!

So……
How big are UFO’s?
One summer were on vacation driving to Williams Arizona to catch the train to the Grand Canyon.
We were on one of the most deserted stretch’s of highway, no one else in sight when something 🛸 hit my wife’s Grand Cherokees windshield and cracked it. Nothing else around???🤔
Sorry about your truck.

How do you stay 2-4 seconds away from oncoming vehicles on a 2 lane county or gravel road?

I had nearly the same thing happen to my Mav. I was in town on a road with 45 mph speed limit. The nearest car to me was about 100 yards ahead. Seemingly out of nowhere a rock chipped my windshield. I wonder if the front tire can pick up a rock and throw it straight up in the air in front of the vehicle. If so that's a first in 50 years of driving.

Throw it in reverse, obviously.
