Just sitting here with not much to do. Looking at the rear bumper at this angle it doesn't look great.

I'm wondering why it wasn't designed to blend straight down with the tailgate? IMO, no step up is needed.

Not enough length/room because of the drive train and hitch?

It protrudes from the body to reduce the possibility of the tailgate and bodywork being damaged in a minor impact. Thus is the reason that all bumpers in the US protrude past the metal bodywork. It is mandated by safety regulations.

A step up is needed to climb into the bed with the tailgate closed, and the bumper provides a lower step than the tailgate for easier reach from the ground.

Just my opinion, but it’s a bumper, just like the front bumper isn’t flushed either to pack in the safety substructure for crashes, etc… Yes back in the old days trucks had optional rear bumpers & some people put roll pans on instead of bumpers however there’s different safety features nowadays.

Wow! You can step into the bed from the ground without using the bumper? I'm tall but not that tall. :)
I trying to figure out how to use that step with the tailgate down.🤣
Actually it needs to be 1-1.5" wider to allow the crash bar to be moved back so that a larger diameter spare can be carried.
