Question on using USB for music

I downloaded about 400 songs onto a thumb drive and tried it last night in the Mav. The stereo system did not recognize it at all. When I touched on sources the USB never showed. Do I need a special sort of USB drive? I just used one I had in a drawer, it was probably 3 years old at least. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

• MP3, M4B, WMA, PCM, WAV, AAC, APE, and FLAC audio file formats.
• WMV, MKV, AVI, MPEG, MP2, MPE, MP4, MOV, M4V and 3GP video file format.
• exFAT, FAT, FAT32 and NTFS file systems.

Start by checking those.

I'm 90% sure the USB ports will not read a thumb drive or SD card over 8GB. I tried multiple drives and SD cards and ended up using a 4GB micro SD card installed in a USB-C reader. I did not have an 8GB device to try, but I know a 16 & 32 will not read. If someone has an 8GB to try we can be 100% sure what the max capacity really is.

Mine works with a 64gb thumb drive

The thumb drive probably needs to be formated in FAT16 or Fat32. The manual says NTFS is supported, but given the other limitations of the head unit, I would be shocked if it is.

I used a Sandisk 32gb Ultra Dual Drive M3.0 that I got from Amazon. I didn't need to format it. I love it because it's compact and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.

Which usb port did you plug into? Only the ports on the dash will work for radio. I also seem to remember early on some people saying their USB ports did not work. Did you try charging phone or something to make sure the port works at all? Just 2 simple thoughts.

Remote possibility the USB port you're attempting to use is faulty. Try using the other one (USB A to USB C - or vice versa - cables or adapters are not costly). Also note that only the factory-installed USB ports up in the front of the cab will crunch data, any others are for charging purposes only.

Also, have you tried accessing the data on the drive via another device?

Have experienced zero problems with using a 32 or 64 capacity drive.

I checked. Except for 2 songs they are M4P and M4A

M4P is a protected Apple format and not supported and M4A is not supported either. You'll need to remove the protection from the M4Ps, and convert those files and the M4As to a supported format.

I did this two months ago and my brain still hasn't recovered.

Thanks for encouragement I will figure it out. Right now leaning toward buying a USB CD player from Amazon and just playing the cds. Not as efficient but it won't hurt my brain. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. I did use the USB to charge my phone an hour ago and it works fine so it is all on the song formats.

Have five or six 64 GB's Flash drives that work fine....
I buy 8 GB flash drives off AliExpress for $3.50 each.
I find SD Flash Drives are so cheap I store only 100+ songs on each SD drive so it is easier to page thru the screen to select songs.
Have separate SD drives for various music: Pop, Classical, Country, Musical, etc. and one with All music on it for long trips.
