In June, I purchased and mounted a hood shield protector sold by Ipoqix through Amazon. What appear to be clones of what I purchased are offerd by a number of other sellers. I posted to Amazon a review representing my initial favorable impression of the both the product and its appearance. Now five months later, I have reason to revisit that review. The hood protector is made from TPE, a rubber-like material, and secured to the truck with double-sided tape. It is pliable and easy follows the contours of the hood’s lip. The problem is that the material has begun and continues to fade out from black to gray in a distinctive pattern as shown in the photos.

I contacted Ipoqix through Amazon’s customer assistance program. Ipoqix’s response was that the color deteriorization was due to having been “exposed to the sun too long”. They offered a $10 refund, later increased to $15, as compensation for my “unpleasant shopping experience”. Rather than accepting, I have chosen to inform other potential buyers of my experience to permit them to make a reasoned purchase decision. Personally, I will be cautious in the future concerning other products made from TPE. I have a truck bed mat made from that material. As it is under my trucks tonneau cover, I have not had the same fading problem with it.

Random letter brands on Amazon are generally cheap Chinese* crap. Amazon has turned into an overpriced Temu as of late and I've stopped shopping there. I wholly recommend people start shopping at specialty stores.

If the local truck accessory store rips me off, I can physically ring his neck. Not something I can easily do with Amazon.

*= Not all Chinese-made items are crap. But cheap Chinese crap is.

That is bizarre. Clearly it isn't "just" from being in the sun too long, because that is very specific, localized discoloration.

I'm sure you're already thinking it, but have you tried any plastic restorer like 303 meant for UV protection and rejuvenating black plastic trim yet? Probably mostly a cosmetic fix, but if it really were sun exposure, that might slow the discoloration down.

You might try SOLUTION FINISH to make that black again. It is OIL-BASED so it is a little messy(if you are messy) but does a great job.I'm on my second bottle and love the effect.I may try the 303 next just because its water based

I ordered a Maxzina hood protector but I haven't installed it yet.

Has anyone had the same fading problem with the Maxzina hood protector?

I am looking at the Weatherteck hood protector. The reason why is the double backed tape has no breaks in it. That way road salts and dirt cannot get under it. I am trying to make a decision between that and the AVS deflector which is elevated so you can clean under it. Any opinions welcome.

I have avs bugflector on my Mav . had to modify 2 center holes ( made larger towards windshield ) to line up with Hood holes . also missing plastic grommets ( avs rude and unhelpful ) but eventually used some left over grommets I had . Hopefully avs has corrected fitment issue by now and improved customer service . I chose bugflector because it extends to cover fenders front edges and it wasn't taped on . Has about 1 inch between Hood and bugflector to clean behind with sponge or rag . so far so good at about 2 + years .
