2023 Lariat 2.0 Eco boost , AWD here . I'm getting just under 27 here in WI winters but once the summer fuels come back in mine will jump to near 30 that's with a commute of 25 miles each way most at interstate speeds up to 80 mph. The eco boost is one quick engine probably quicker than most full size trucks out there. I also wanted the Eco to get the 4k towing.
Heard great things about the hybrids too, but believe they excel more at lower in town speeds, where my usage is mostly highway

Another vote for a Prius or Corolla hybrid commuter. Or Hyundai etc.
I have no interest in a car , I want a truck even if its small and has a small bed . That's why I'm
wanting a Maverick . Seems like the perfect choice , just still on the Hybrid / EB fence .... I cant thank
you and everyone else enough for the valuable input I'm getting , this is a great forum !

When I went from 87 octane to 91 octane, I get 3 more miles per gallon with my Eco in town.
You’re not wrong. But gp1200x is not wrong either. Yet the two statements appear contradictory, which could confuse some readers.

So let’s clarify: As 710-oil says, it’s because of ignition retard. Low octane gas causes detonation under higher engine load / cylinder pressures. The fix is to retard the timing when the engine is under load. The downside side is that retarding the timing not only delays the initial ignition of the air/fuel mixture, but the air/fuel mixture will still be burning when the exhaust valve opens. When gasoline is burnt in the exhaust and not in the engine, that energy is not captured and mpg goes down (not only that, but it makes the engine run very hot).

High octane gas allows for more ignition advance, which means a higher fraction of the potential energy gets converted into kinetic energy inside of the cylinder, before the exhaust valve opens.

So here’s the discrepancy part: detonation only happens under higher engine loads. So if you’re using cruise control on the freeway, the engine is under low load and the ignition is not being retarded, which means mpg should not be effected.

However, in the city, each time you stop-and-go, the engine is under load and if you’re using low octane gas, the ignition will need to be retarded, which then starts eating into your city mpg.

With that said, I do put 87 octane in my ecoboost on freeway roadtrips without a trailer or other cargo.

Im not going to call others liars but until I see some screenshot proof of trip computers with average speeds above 65mph and onboard efficiency showing 36mpg+ i just can’t believe it.
Exactly this. Every time I see a 40 mpg @ 70 mph claim, it is either 1) a claim with no screen shot 2) a screen shot showing 40 mpg, but with average speed of under 60 mph or 3) a screen shot showing 40+ mpg with 70 mph average speed, but a trip distance of <10 miles, which means they were likely going downhill or had a strong tailwind.

I am very much interested in seeing a screen shot of a 100+ mile trip at 70+ mph average speed in someone’s Maverick hybrid.

I bought an ecoboost for the awd and 4k towing, which was not available with the hybrid. Now that it is, it could be a viable trade in option in the future.

Up until 2007, the EPA just did city the city cycle and highway cycles, but they were unrealistic and they decided to “fix” the test by adding 3 additional cycles; high speed/acceleration, cold weather and hot weather. Post 2006, the EPA city ratings decreased by 11% and the highway ratings decreased by 22%.

The high speed cycle result is averaged with the 60 mph, low acceleration, old “highway” test to produce the post-2006 epa highway rating. The methodology is not perfect and it does not accurately reflect high-speed, interstate, cruise control, constant speed driving, but the number is a lot more realistic than a what it used to be.
Wow that is very telling. Average speed 48 mph.

That we are even able to come close to EPA ratings on highway is a miracle. During the summer I'm getting 36-36.5 @ 70 mph with tires over inflated to low 40's.

Hello all , my first post and very happy to be here . I have been skulking around a bit and reading
a lot of posts , I have a 3/31 build date for my 2025 Lariat AWD hybrid , space white , BAP , tow pack , sun roof , slider , console vault and some other goodies . After lots of reading I'm beginning to wonder if I should have gone with the ecoboost and the 8 spd .

After lots of reading it seems the abundant mileage I was hoping to get is going to be a pipe dream , I
like the thought of trying something new "hybrid technology" but I'm leaving power on the table vs ecoboost
and I may only achieve 5-6 more miles per gallon with hybrid .

Currently I'm commuting to work 110 MI round trip in a 2023 F450 Lariat diesel dually (keeping) so no matter which maverick I get it will be a mileage improvement over the 17 I'm getting now . Can any
25' hybrid owners give me some feedback or advice whether I should keep this hybrid coming or maybe
opt for the ecoboost , I'm trying not to make the wrong decision . It seems from reading some of you really like your hybrid's and some do not any input much appreciated !
I have absolutely no regrets. And you have ordered the twin of mine (25 Space White Lariat Hybrid AWD 4k tow package and BAP with roll-up tonneau. I did not go with the moon roof but did add floor mats and mud flaps. Forgot to mention spray-in bed liner. I have had mine for 5 weeks. My commute is a mix of highway and city-suburbs-industrial park driving totalling around 40 miles. I have averaged mid to high 40 mpg . I went for a 90 minute run a couple of weeks ago with a mix of highway and country roads and achievied 53 mpg. I am 6'4" and 260lbs and am totally comfortable. I have dealt with one snow event and the AWD did not disappoint. I don't know what more to say. Hang in there.

I don’t disagree with you. But it will be next to impossible to show an average speed of 70 when there are normal slowdowns for traffic, getting off the interstate for a bathroom break etc etc. that doesn’t mean that an average mpg of 40 is wrong or that the person is intentionally trying to be deceitful. What I believe is that most people see the 40 after having been on a long interstate drive and simply say they averaged 40 mpg “on the interstate” but the more accurate thing would be to say on that trip. Slowing down for stops dramatically reduces average speed and in the hybrid significantly improves mpg. Someone would have to get up to speed on the interstate, set their cruise and then reset the trip computer. Then remember to take a pic of their trip computer after driving at least 100 miles without stopping and hopefully never having slowdown for a slower driver during those 100 miles in order to show what the trip computer calculates as avg mpg at 70 mph. If I can remember to try it sometime I will do that. I’m certain it will show and avg mpg of only 33-35. If I have no headwind or have a decent tailwind it might show 36-37.

Amazingly the Hybrid gets better milage in the city than on highway the article I am attempting to send alludes to that. It maybe a little High on milage figures although I did get a little above 40 in September when I receive my 2024 Maverick. But down to 32 in cold winter driving.

Thus article contains a little higher gas milage than you will probably get in highway driving but I did get around 40 for first few weeks back in September. With around 32 in very cold weather. This is the kicker the Hybrid gets better milage in the city than Highway.

And again I love my Maverick and I don’t regret trading my 23 Tremor for it, at all. Even with the lower than expected efficiency and dash rattle that is far worse than anything the tremor had in 14k miles.

I’m allowed to really enjoy it and pan its shortcomings as well!

So I just got back from Portland OR, about 115 miles. All I-5. Temp was 49-52 degrees.
Cruise control set at 72mph. Eco mode. Very light rain here and there. No real wind.

We got 36.3mpg on the way down and 34.9 on the way back. I didn't take a screen shot. We are pretty close to sea level.

Take it however you want. That is what we got today. The is on the computer. I will fill up tomorrow and get the average for the entire trip.

The best trip MPG I have gotten is 57.2mpg on a 7 mile trip with almost all electric. In town average of trips is about 44mpg give or take.

Frankly that's not amazing - that's the nature of hybrids, has been for years.

Only people that discover that fact AFTER buying the wrong one for their usage usually have some choice things to say.

That question from Preston Ford is also missing the important fact speed matters, as so many posts prior to yours are discussing. Some great info there, better than that website.

Man...skip 8 pages of reading and get the Hybrid. You won't be sorry. If you are...trade it in on an Eco...and then say..."Dam...I should have kept the Hybrid":clap::clap:

Ok, so I filled it up this morning. Hand calculated MPG for the trip was 34.6mpg.

This would reflect about 90% freeway.

Would like to know average trip speed, number of miles, number of gallons, etc.
