Real question
What person over 18 makes 20k or less outside of students as a primary income?
100% buying a vehicle that costs a years salary is a terrible idea (especially a new vehicle!)

Bro time to start working smarter not harder!
Depending if that's gross 20k or netting 20k...that income would be a result of making between $10-12/hr working 40hr/week for all 52 weeks in a year. Even if minimum wage was $15, at 40hr x 52wk that's still only $31,200 gross.

There are definitely people out there working harder to make that $20-30k/yr than there are people who might make 2x or 3x that amount.

Maybe with Ford but I would disagree on the paint chips. Dad bought a 35th anniversary Z28 and had paint issues covered under warranty. Repainted the entire hood under warranty.
If the panel was determined to have a problem with say improper preparation which would cause the paint to adhere improperly yes, that would be a warrantable defect. However, that is generally not the case with a random paint chip(s). Having said that, a Service Manager has the ability to pretty much get anything covered if he is inclined to do so (like I said there is always exceptions). I'm just talking about general policy.

I may just spray Some clear coat to my maverick. Speakers I may upgrade them too.
About the interior I'm sure can be paint it after a few years of use.

What I really worry is about the engine, trans etc. etc... Mechanical issues.

My 08 Prius had the whole hood with a lot of chips on it. That happen too all cars I'm sure the shape of a car matters on this problem, Aerodynamic- Wind may hit different in other cars Idk.

I’m with u guys too. They cheaped out like it’s a 90 ford escort. Then after looking over the paperwork the dealer slipped in their adjusted price lol 😂. So I end up with a 31000$ truck for the cruise control that starts at 19,900 lmao

Does anything age as poorly or feel as cheap as faux leather? Give me cloth over synthetic cow skin all day.
I agree. Or at least I used to. The Active X seats are amazing. Changed my mind on vegan leather. Or Faux Leather. Or Pleather. Whatever you want to call it. I wouldn't change to Leather in my Lariat now if someone paid me $500. At least not a Ford OEM leather.

Right, I can do math but I’m super curious if anyone knows someone that works a job like that
Only people I’ve known to work a job at that level were either retired trying to stay under their earning max (to still get SS checks/pension) or those that wanted a low stress work environment because their spouse made enough to cover them….. now there is another group that works for that amount of money… and they for sure wouldn’t be looking at new cars

There is difference between a cheap vehicle and an inexpensive vehicle. I have been working on the assumption that Ford decided to make an inexpensive truck, which is possible by doing things like:
1. Unibody is less expensive than body-on-frame construction. The result is less carrying/towing capacity and reduced off-road capability--but still great quality. Cheap would be building a body-on-frame with inferior materials and design.
2. Simpler electronics save money while still providing necessary functions. Cheap would be adding fancy-looking features that don't work.
3. Using off-the-shelf parts is less expensive than using custom parts. Cheap would be making fancy-looking and unique stuff that hasn't been tested.
4. Rigid plastic is inexpensive. Cheap would trying to make imitation "soft touch" stuff that crumbles after a few years.
5. Reducing options is a good way to reduce design and production costs. Pretty hard to make a cheap or inexpensive vehicle with a lot of customization.
6. Basic paint is inexpensive compared to super-lustrous stuff. Cheap paint chips easily and fades. Here's hoping that the Maverick's paint isn't cheap, but concerns may be warranted here.
7. "Luxury" features like electric seat adjustability add cost, but leaving them off isn't cheap. Cheap would be installing crappy little motors that burn out easily.

I could go on.

But my point is that the Maverick team seems to have worked hard to make an inexpensive truck, without it being a cheap truck. Here's hoping that's actually the case!

Plenty of CNAs, Medical Assistants, receptionists, and Janitorial/Laundry staff keeping hospitals, urgent cares, and doctor’s offices open making $10-12/hr. pre-tax and it ain’t because of the low stress environment. They either find purpose in the work or it’s the best job they can get with their skillset. If someone has ever drawn your blood in one stick instead of four, you can attest that some folks should maybe make a little more than they do. They still need or would like to have new cars every now and then. When the average used car price is 26-28k, why wouldn’t they be in the market?

Totally agree, I moved from a base mits Lancer to an XLT AWD with everything you can put to it and I feel like I am in a space ship in my Mav, I love it and don't find it cheap at all.
I bet my Maverick XLT LUX (assuming it shows up) will also feel pretty nice compared to my 2006 Escalade (223,000 miles) with a ruined interior, cracked leather seats, permanent check engine light, inoperable airbags, engine oil leak and broken seat heaters. Not to mention the dent in the front quarter panel and the rust beginning to eat away at the rocker panels.

If someone offered me a brand new Escalade to drive, I'd take one over the Maverick. Then again, a brand new Escalade is $100,000+...

I miss my element so much, it was an '04 so it was just falling apart. I replaced it with a renegade but not a fan of all the fabric. I'm hoping the mav is as close as I could get to the element today 🤞
The Maverick is a great replacement for the Element. I would have bought a new Element but they didn't make one :)

The Maverick interior had a more rugged jeep feel which is one of the things that attracted me to it in the first place. The overall size plus the roomy interior are also like the Element + the 4cyl but it gets better MPG and has more horsepower.

It's a great option moving on from the Element - my concerns are all cosmetic at this point. Mechanically nothing bad to say at all.

They either find purpose in the work or it’s the best job they can get with their skillset. Often, their skillset is extremely high, and their pay is garbage relative to that skillset. If someone has ever drawn your blood in one stick instead of four, you can attest that not everyone is paid their fair wage. They still need or would like to have new cars every now and then. When the average used car price is 26-28k, why wouldn’t they be in the market?
That also reminds me of the concept that being poor is actually really expensive. You may 'need' to get a crappy old beat up used car due to lack of savings and inability to get credit for a better one. And that is more likely to break down, thus threatening your immediate ability to keep getting a wage, and sapping of your limited liquid capital often shared with critical needs like housing, food, and care of children. And you might actually end up paying more on the purchase and maintenance over a similar time period than if you had been able to get financing and get a more reliable vehicle.

So I can imagine the calculus that (if you're able to get the financing), having a relatively large car payment may actually cover your ass, as long as you can really be guaranteed it's reliable and your maintenance costs will be low for a significant period of time. Even newer cars can have issues and recalls, so the decision is gonna be real complicated for every individual in that situation.

The popularity of PPF and vinyl wraps have allowed manufacturers to cheap out on paint and save $20 per car. Big money on volume.

Hey atleast its not clearcoat peeling on 90s cars or blue peeling on 80s cars or clearcoat flaking on the first 20 year of factory alloy wheels.

Yeah do you remember the issues with the hoods on dodge trucks back in the day. The peeling paint on cars in the 80s was bad too. You’d see the cracks and then it would start curling.

If you don’t like it now you won’t like it in 2 years. Sell it now while you can still get all your money back.
this is the best take. i doubt you'll suddenly have a change of heart on the things you listed. selling sounds like the best option.

Yes I know plenty of people that work a job like that. Perhaps they are in school and still live at home while completing their education, but they are able to make those car payments. I think many of you seem to under estimate the ability of those making $20,000 to $30,000 per year and their ability to make it work for them. I personally respect the hell out of that. To say they don't deserve or shouldn't even consider a new car. I CALL BS!
