My 2024 Lariat has 18” Michelin Primacy, treadwear 540, with good tread after 5000 miles. Why does ford use different brand tires?
IMG_0178.webp
Ford doesn't make tires. Like any any other outsourced part, they solicit a bid for a particular specification and choose from what is available. The Conti TX tires are made in Mexico, the vehicle is assembled in Mexico...can probably put 2+2 together there for why that tire may have been chosen over others. I don't know where the OE Michelin tire is made, but it also seems to be a kinda middle of the road tire that is not great, but not terrible.

It's deception.

On mine the wear went SIGNIFICANTLY LESS the second half than the first half.

My dealership had the nerve to try and sell me new tires at 17,000 miles.

I am now at almost 39,000 miles and will go well past 40k on the stock 2022 XLT Hybrid tires. And I TOW a lot a lot of the time too.

It's as if the bottom 4/32 is much tougher rubber than the top 4/32.

My advice: STICK WITH IT and don't buy tires too quickly.
A lot of tires use this trick. The softer compounds on the outside to do better on the traction tests. Also many tires the sipping doesn't go full depth of the tread. Traction drops dramatically on tires with less than 6/32". Unless only driving dry pavement, tires should not be driven down to nothing.

Well after reading through this thread I am the one who started it. It seems like mine are wearing out faster than most. I know many will think I drive fast. I just don't. My 2020 Ecosport I had before the Mav factory tires had about 28 K with about the same tire depth as my Mav tires have now at about half that mileage. Then I sold Ecosport and got my Mav August 17 2023.

I do keep the tires at 35 PSI and they have worn even. I do rotate and fronts and backs are about the same. My Blizzak snows hardly show any wear which I used for two winters so far. .Oh I did have the OEM tires on just after first winter in early March and we had a snow maybe 2 inches on road. Wow they SUCKED compared to my Blizzaks. Hitting the brakes it just kept going and going . The snow melted by next day. But it was interesting comparison.

So not sure why mine lasted so short. They have 4/32 now I hope to make it through August NY inspection. I need 2/32 to pass. Then last until I put on snows typically mid November and get tires next spring. Not sure if that will happen. .

But thanks for all the replies. I wasn't sure anyone would reply.I was clearly wrong on that.

Edit: I added a screenshot of the tread depth stated by the manufacturer. It says 8/32. Somehow I have 9/32 or im measuring wrong/out of spec guage

As I've observed in the literally dozens of duplicate threads on this subject, I was super happy to trash the garbage tires shipped with my XLT AWD LUX. They were going, going, gone at 30,000 miles or so.

I replaced them with Michelin Defender 2 tires, which demonstrably handle better and actually have tread depth. The stock Continental tires squealed on a cloverleaf. The Michelins don't.

How do you get promoted at Ford? You take cost out of the vehicle. What is the Maverick? The result of that policy. Which is a good or bad result - depends on your point of view.

Interesting. Continental tires are usually good tires. However, my F150 King Ranch came with Goodyear Wranglers and they have been excellent tires. When I have to replace the tires on the Maverick, I'll probably get Goodyears.
What I don't like about Goodyear tires is the traction sipes in the tread blocks only go halfway into the block, when you are 50% worn, wet weather traction is crap. Learned that a lifetime ago when I worked at Montgomery Ward Auto Express and was sent to the Michelin tire plant in South Carolina for training.

Oooh! A tire thread!
These tires are almost the same size as the ones on my Transit (not Connect). 235/65-16. By "size" I mean overall height and width; yes I know they are different rim sizes. (cut you off at the knees, didn't I? )
From my experience with the Transit (not Connect) and my Sprinter, Michelin LTX are the gold standard. I also had a set of Toyo HT2 that would have gone 100k on the Sprinter if not for an alignment issue that wore the inner edge of one of the front tires faster, resulting in replacement set at 85k. BUT: this was also the only set that I had siped at the tire shop, so I don't know if that contributed to their long life or not.
These sets of tires were all 10-ply, E-rated. 80psi max. I don't know how well the same model light duty SUV/Car tires used on the Maverick would compare.
I mentioned my strategy for cheap/free tires for the life of the vehicle, but I might look around for some lightly used Michelin or Toyo tires when the time comes.
Also of note, the stock Contis wear faster than the stock Hankooks on the Transit (not Connect). However, everyone agrees that they have better traction in all conditions and are quieter.

Goodyear makes three versions of the Territory, AT, HT and MT, all look a little different. I got a sidewall puncture in one of mine, I will be replacing it with a new one, so I will have 3 OEMs from Ford and one non OEM from Goodyear.. I only have 3500 miles on the Mav so should not be an issue..
There is an oval on the sidewall that has the manufacturer product number. Usually 5-6 digits. You can order and specify that number to get the identical production version. This way you can be assured that the tread compound, belts, siping, etc are identical. Then depending on tread wear differences rpm's on drive wheels will be close to the same. At some point you may want to replace two tires instead of one. Maybe even 4 if you want to X pattern rotate.

You can get sets of 4 tires with tread depth measured. Sometimes they have "one trip" tires that have full tread but the buyer bought, drove around awhile and returned saying he didn't like them and returned using the "try them or return them satisfaction guarantee". (Apparently some actually do that). UTIRES.COM and shipping is free either to your address or to your tire shops address. My B-in-Law uses them all the time. My son got 70k miles on OEM Hankooks on his 2018 Nissan Pickup.

I would have replaced two, but with only 3500 miles on them, did not think it was necessary..

Hybrid with pro contacts with 22k on them and there wearing great - I don't understand the premature wear some people are experiencing. Are you rotating every 5k?

I have a 2023 XLT hybrid delivered August 2023. with the CONTINENTAL PROCONTACT TX 225-65-17/ I have just over 17 K miles. I also have another set of wheels with blizzak snows. So for two winters used those. Yet my tires MIGHT make it to end of this summer. So maybe 11 K miles on the oem tires. .

Anyone else have this bad a result??? I drive slow too.

My previous vehicle was a 2020 ecosport I sold just under 3 years 28K miles and the tires were about the same as mine are on maverick. BUT that had 28K BUT also had snows for the Ecosport too for winter. So the Mav oem tires REALLY are BAD.

Is it just me???

I think I will get Hankook Kinergy PT tires next. ........... 90 K warranty If I get 60 K I will be happy.
i got 18K on mine before 2 were down to 4/32 and the others 5/32nd - mostly city driving, had them rotated as I should, inflated properly. Yeah, they come with 8/32nds on them - tire guy said fwd hybrid use more torque and might have some effect on them. You're not alone.

Just rotated at 10K on 5/4, and did service check measuring the Conti ProContacts.
5 & 6/32's on the front.
7 & 8/32's on the back.
Back right had been replaced @ 7228, so only 2772 on it.
Seems like after the next 10K rotate, might be beneficial to go to 5K cycle.
I guess at next cycle it could be down to 5 & 5 front, 4 & 5 back.

This current replacement has the DOT info (dated 3524) like the other 3 OEM tires - IP5 0FBC3K. (all those dated 06 or 0824)
I had a replacement from the original before this current one - P52Y WC4H. (dated 1724)
It was in stock at dealer, whereas current replacement had to be shipped from elsewhere.
(2 replacements under dealer free 1 yr warranty including road hazard - got my money's worth)

I'm wondering if that's the difference between special OEM tire, and the normal Conti version of it.

What do you all show for DOT TIN's - especially curious on the fast wear folks?
