Lower Gas Mileage in Hybrid

Thanks, l bought Hybrid because it was cheaper than Ecoboost. I am going to drive few weeks around 70 mph that will increase my commute time by 2-3 minutes, let’s see if that improves mileage.

... I think you misunderstood me! You need to be closer to 60-65! I only know one hybrid owner and he is getting 45 MPG on average in Miami traffic in other words 45-55 MPH

60-65 mph is going to be difficult in tollway.

As much as MPG does matter, tailpipe emissions matter as well.

The later model TDI yes, the earlier one no. Like any other sub group of owners there were tweaks to improve MPG.

I would like to see some actual data comparing the efficiency of hybrid and ecoboost at different speeds. The advantage of the atkinson cycle engine is that it is very efficient running at moderate constant output (sort of like a diesel), but with less power potential than conventional otto cycle. My guess is that you would have to be going pretty darn fast for the ecoboost to be more efficient than the hybrid.

With our hybrid, we are averaging 48mpg overall after ~1200 miles, and about half our miles are my wife's highway commute to work (she has a lead foot). I have a lot of experience driving hybrids and I drive a lot more "conservatively" than she does.

In my own real-world my commute is all city (12.1 miles), the average speed is 40 (highest speed is 45), and I'm averaging 47 mpg, I would assume that anything over 45, the Hybrid wouldn't be the most efficient.

I highly doubt that is the case, as the Atkinson engine is specifically designed for the use case of moderate speed continuous cruising. Overall, we're currently sitting at 48.0 avg after 1300 miles. At least half of those miles being my lead-footed wife's highway work commute - she wouldn't be caught dead going under 75 on I-15. While I don't have any objective data, if I were to guess, hybrid is more efficient than the ecoboost until you get closer to 80mph.

I get in the right hand lane and stay between 65 & 70. I'm averaging 36-38 when I divide gas fill-up into trip mileage.

I get that all day if I stay at 60 or under. My average at that speed is 44 mpg.

Yes and manual calculations for the first 2 tanks were almost spot on. Based on computer I average well over 50 on most trips, even with a lot of highway involved and we have a lot of short trips that are 100% electric (ie. to the library, local parks, to church and back). I drove on our ~220 mile trek (round trip, almost all highway) to visit wife's grandparents a few weeks ago, and both there and back the computer said we averaged >52mpg. I drive "conservatively", have a lot of experience with hybrids and I employ all the tricks - I more than make up for my wife (likely) getting 30-35mpg on her commutes. Of course, it drives her nuts.

Our other car is a '17 VW jetta, rated 29/40 and 33 combined. I generally get 600+ on a tank; over 42mpg combined. If you stay off the turbo, that 1.4T sips fuel.

We have a KIA Niro 2018 bought new April 2018. We are averaging around 46 mpg over that period of time. every year we go to SoCal. Summer of 2018 we went to California, Texas, Alabama, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, and home in Birch Bay, Washington in that order. So the present 73,000+ miles is quite a bit on the highway. But that good mpg does not give me space for DIY projects. We will lose mpg with the Maverick, but gain versatility. Still waiting for it.

Hi All, looking for some advice - l have driven my Lariat Hybrid 2400 miles in 3 months but average mileage reported on dash has hovered between 34 to 36 MPG.

My 80% drive is highway at 65 to 75 MPH.

Many members here have reported getting mileage of 40 & higher, so not sure if there’s something wrong with my truck or my driving.

Any suggestions?

I drive a combo of city and Highway and my Hwy is between 75-80 mph and I am right around 40 mpg

same, i do 100+ a day and i already hit 15k miles within 3 months , i was getting 35-36 mpg, now i put super and i drive on eco mode, im getting 41-44 highway , i thinking its mostly the eco mode that helping with the mpg but try driving with eco mode on
