In a hybrid unit with the E-CVT transmission, what exactly will the "low" button in the shifter keep low?

Two possibilities in my mind, 1. It will engage engine braking, or more likely 2. have the electric motor not spin fast to simulate a low gear on a traditional transmission.

I know they have a low button in the hybrid, as I have seen them on the reviews. If it had an 8 speed auto as with the ecoboost, it would lock in low speed. What would make low low in a one speed ECVT?

The hybrid does have the L button. in addition to providing engine braking or increased regen as well as being used to put the Maverick in neutral mode

I suspect it is like the Chevy Volt, where L increases regen. It would have no effect on acceleration, but would help keeping speed under control going downhill.

I mean the ECVT has a ratio, just because it doesn't shift. I would imagine L would just keep the ratio under a certain upper bound for your given speed. If it didn't have a ratio, you wouldn't be able to move off the line, or keep the engine quiet at highway speed.

The hybrid also has a feature called Grade Assist, where it makes use of regen braking or ice engine braking to reduce speed downhill.

I have a suspicion that L mode isn't really "needed" on the hybrid but it might be nice if you are hitting a steep grade or dirt road and want to keep the power as constant as possible.

These comments are comforting. I was picturing freewheeling around in the ice and snow. Lower gearing is a lifesaver. Paddle shifters would be awesome in the slick stuff.

I most likely won't see my hybrid until April anyway, so no matter.

If anything you usually want to start out in a higher gear in the ice. More torque multiplication makes it easier to overcome the decreased traction.

This guy knows. When I drive in my old truck, that has a three speed auto, I manually shift it into 2nd when taking off in slick situations as it makes it harder for the engine to spin the tires at low rpm and keeps the wheels from spinning out and sliding the back end to the side.

...I was more concerned with slowing, stopping, and general stay on the road stuff.

Get the best tires you can afford, leave a large gap between you and whatever you don't want to crash into, and brake early. Or you could get a vehicle with a stick shift! I got one of those in my ugly Bronco. Fun stuff.

For the hybrid I don't think LOW does anything for moving the vehicle forward. It seems to only increase the regenerative braking effect.

The only thing I find in the owners manual is the following: "LOW (L) This mode is for driving on steep slopes. The transmission will hold low gear for maximum torque driving uphill and maximum engine braking driving downhill. You can enter this mode at any vehicle speed. Note:prolonged use of this mode could lower fuel economy. With your vehicle in drive (D), press the L button to enter this mode."

This entry does specify which Maverick model it is referring to. I have not felt any difference in my hybrid using LOW or not using LOW when cruising or accelerating. The only difference I feel is when you let off the power and coast. The regenerative braking effect is enhanced. Since can activate this at any speed, it stands to reason it does nothing for a CVT.
