Surfstar’s interesting thread on “Longest hybrid oil change interval” showed folks going well beyond 10,000 miles before the OLM reached 0%.

Fine for their normally aspirated Atkinson ICE - but nasty bad for a Turbo EB.

Question - have any EB drivers had their OLM allow 10,000 miles or more before reaching 0%?

I change my oil every 5,000 tops, sometimes earlier if i have a trip coming up.

I did change my oil once and reset the trip B. did not reset the OLM, and it went to 9700 miles before it showed 0%.

I went 10k once when moving cross-country. We took 3 weeks and 7500 miles. Started the trip at close to 3k on the oil. Computer still showed 12% after 10k+. I do not generally go by that computer's calculation, but that and the fact that the oil looked good and didn't need topping off, I felt comfortable with going long. That was 30k miles ago. I do 7.5k intervals. I was always a 3k guy. But that was with 70s-80s tech and tolerances. Plus conventional oil.

I feel comfortable with 7.5k. Time will tell.

Huh - so willing to do more than 10k if the right kind of miles on the EB too.

I guess actually the manual says the service intervals shouldn't exceed 10K or 1 yr - that's all the stuff in the list like rotating tires and inspecting everything.

Or, do all that earlier if the OLM has you do oil/filter earlier.

7.5k is how long I went on my last one with full synthetic. I had 18% left on my oil minder.

The oil looked quite nasty, but I know that doesn't mean much these days. I'm not comfortable with 10k give my spirited mountain driving/dust/how cheap full synthetic is.

HeyBales pointed out this thread to me, I'm a hybrid owner. I'm curious if any here have done oil sample reports? Blackstone labs is the favorite if you've never done one, they like to go in depth on the (potential) meaning if something is a bit off.

Last change for me at 26,726 on the oil, (heavily used for towing, and only ~2 months on the oil), and they said run it for 2k more miles. (their standard recommendation when everything looks good, and you check the box for interest in longer intervals)

To me 5000 miles is plenty, oil changes are cheap, motors aren’t. Turbocharged vehicles like fresh clean oil, I change mine and reset my trip and change again every 5k. I pay no attention to the OLM. While you’re at it I’d make a habit or turning the Auto start stop feature off as well.

An EB might be able to get 20,000 highway miles on new oil before changing at 2 months - as long as they let the engine idle for a minute or so before turning it off! Wipe the bugs off the windshield etc while idling before shutting off & pumping gas:)

I guess I'll be the guinea pig. 7.5k oil changes. 60k transmission/ptu/rdu changes. And I use start/stop.(not always)I'm sure it causes some wear, but nothing like what towing, mountains, and stomping on the gas cause. 76k total miles so far. We shall see.

I was a 3K oil change, pre 1980, 5K, until 2000's, and now 7.5k since my 2014 F150 (sold at 80k), '15 Focus (sold at 75k), '20 Escape (1.5L, currently 63K), and my '23 Maverick with 25K and lots of towing. Whatever mileage or time you chose is the right one for you!

I do mine religiously at 5,000 miles for the sake of my Turbo and I use Full Synthetic.
Last time was at 15,000 miles.
My OLM showed 13,000 to next oil change.

I’m at 18,400 now, oil was changed at 15,000.
The oh so useless OLM says I’ve got
9,000 to go.
Screw that POS bit if tech.
Ignore it.

Ecoboost’ers
Use full synthetic and do 5,000 miles intervals.

Mavbrid drivers, use the recommended weight and use Full Synthetic and do no more than 7,500 mile oil change intervals.

The 2.5 starts up so many more times and it’s often asked to perform immediately before reaching optimum temp.

That’s my not so humble opinion.

That would get both expensive, and time consuming if I had to do that… (does math) every 2 weeks. 😂

You also forgot that the Mavbrid is asked to perform at reasonably high load all the time, whereas the EB gets to laze around at least some of the time. 😉

Does the EB report oil temp or turbo temp, or anything else useful on ScanGauge? EGT?
