I understand the water based paint argument but then why do my neighbors who have 3+ year old Nissans and VW and drive the same roads / same commute not experience the same level/number and type of chips. My boss drives a 2 year old Atlas and goes skiing/winter driving more than I do and his paint looks fantastic. My co worker drives a Subaru 3+ old and he does logging road camping and mountain biking etc and his paint has one rock chip we found and it looks nothing like the flaking on the mavericks. Yes the water based paint is likely an issue but the Ford paint in particular (much like the aforementioned Tesla paint) has to simply be of a worse quality or process. Again I just can’t imagine what this is going to look like in 10 years etc. Definitely going to look into repair than PPF.

Really? Every one of those look like stone hits from driving too close to the guy in front.
No sir. I have never tailgated in my life, and I do not hang out behind trucks on the freeway. I am the opposite of what you described.

Me too. I've had 7 windshields replaced and 3 paint jobs on 2 Rangers due to rock and sand hits. Trucks are aerodynamic bricks going down the road, picking up a hit from every grain of sand in the air. I wonder then if your vehicle has a defective or missing primer coat or oil under the paint or something. That sounds like a warranty repaint coming up...

Alto Blue Maverick delivered January 22. Just hit 30,000 miles.

I've got numerous paint chips on my front fenders (none on the plastic bumper) and one on my fender behind my drivers side back door. Also one above the windshield. I also have a weird huge paint flake on the inside area that is hidden when the tailgate it closed and I sure as heck didn't hit it with anything there to cause that.

I'm driving the same roads/commute that I drove for 10 years in my Honda Element and the Honda when I sold it had less paint chips than my 1.5 year old Ford. Additionally the big difference is that on this car the paint is FLAKING off. On most cars if you get a rock chip/ding it has a small contact point where the paint is effected and may even cause a small dent. These don't look like typical rock chips. I feel like the paint on this truck is having some issue where even hitting a bee is causing it to flake off.

I have a oil change appointment tomorrow and I'm going to bitch about it along with a couple of other issues BUT I wanted to see if anyone else is having these issues. I know on Facebook other people have posted up about this problem and then all the fan boys with only 3,000 miles post up and say no problem and the other guys say "that's what you get for buying a $20K truck", or this is a problem with newer types of paint, BUT I've done a lot of looking around recently and not a single car in my family, my friends family, or in my entire work parking lot has these types of paint chips or as many of them on their vehicles. Most of the vehicles I looked at are older than mine as well and their paint looks so much better.

I've owned a ton of vehicles and Ford's and I can say none of them ever looked as bad as this for rock chips and especially not after 30K miles. If I make it to 100K my Ford is going to look like it's been shot with a 100 BB's.

I don't drive behind trucks. I don't tailgate. I don't live on a gravel road. I don't go off road.

I do commute 50 miles every day. I do take road trips. I do take good care of my vehicles.

SO - anyone else having issues and is this related to -

  • Build date - are earlier models having more paint chips?
  • Color - Is Alto Blue just having issues?
Interested to hear feedback from anyone else. Here are some photos of some of the worst ones - and it's not all of them. The big ones are visible from many feet away and I get sad everytime I walk up towards the truck now. I feel like with chips like this you'd hear a rock hitting the vehicle, etc. Every month I see more. I'm going to be making a video to upload to my Ford Maverick YouTube channel that shows all of them as well as comparisons to some other cars.

After seeing this and many other complaints about paint chips, I plan to at clear paint protection film to a number of areas on my '23 Alto Blue Maverick when it gets delivered. I have a Mid-June build date. I will also be installing mud flaps and the spray-in bed liner.

Just don’t do the ford mud flaps, they cause another paint problem :)

Service advisor looked and seemed to agree the flakes and number were weird, he had a guy take it to the body shop for a look so waiting to hear what they say. I think even he was surprised when he saw them.

I have about two dozen little chips. Straight down to metal. I have a 30 mile daily commute. My wife does the same commute in her 2021 Kia minivan. Hers still looks new and 20,000 more miles on it. Definitely a difference between vehicles. Quality? Aerodynamics? Global warming? I have no idea. But it's frustrating.

Half of them came from a 3,000 mile round trip to Wyoming a few weeks ago. I was not following people closely. Far from it. Used Adaptive Cruise Control almost the whole way with the furthest distance setting. Every time I fueled up, there was another one it seemed.

I have touched up chips twice already. But I will have to do it again before the next Washington winter comes back. Or it will be rusting in no time. I guess I am glad to have an aluminum hood for this reason.

The paint on my Maverick is weird. I dropped a spray bottle on the hood while detailing and not a dent/scratch ,and yet casually brushing a cardboard box while taking it out of the back seat created a smudge on the door.

sometimes rock chips come looking for you regardless if you tailgate or not. Driving on the interstate is like playing Russin Roulette.

3 chips so far on area51 color, 700 miles. That paint is thinner than a trophy wife! Putting another coat of graphene ceramic next week.

Update: talked with the head of service and while they can’t do anything he did say the flaking nature would warrant bringing this up with Ford and he said he’d help connect me for that. While we were talking we looked at another vehicle in the bay maybe 5 years old that had rock chips and they are much more of the type you are used to seeing - small definitive marks that would be indicative of a small sharp rock hitting metal/paint at velocity. Almost unnoticeable from 5 feet away while mine are unmistakably visible from even 10 feet away. The flaking nature of the rock chips is definitely not what would be considered normal.

Can everyone please post up pictures of all paint chips similar to mine? Up going to take the issue to Ford and I’d love to have photo examples of other colors. I also may include them in a video for my YouTube channel later on. Thank you.

I'm sorry, that sucks! My cactus grey only has 1 small chip and I have 10,000 miles on it.
Cars will get chipped from rocks and pebbles. but the paint shouldn't be coming off in sheets like that

Hi there, I'd be happy to look into your Maverick concerns on my end. Will you send us a message with your VIN and dealership info? I can look into things on my end.
I started a message thread with "DREW" of your Ford social media team in February 9th, 2022 to complain about the "few" paint chips that were showing up. Drew requested my VIN information and a bunch of other information and I never heard anything. Now I have a lot more paint chips.

Ford had to cut a great many corners to get the truck to a price point. Hyundai CV joints, cheap paint, made in MX... I own both a Honda ridgeline and XLT maverick. Price was about same. All things considered, I give the honda an 8 out of 10 while maverick gets a 6.
