It requires an abundance of cheap electrical power to process bauxite in an arc furnace and produce aluminum metal.
I have owned varying amounts of Alcoa stock for 40+ years. Dollar cost buying and selling based on % of return. I came out excellent when Alcoa split into two companies. Then later Arconic spun off the portion that became Howmet Aerospace which makes aircraft parts and was unhappy when the Arconic portion was purchased for $30/sh (big profit but did not roll it into APO stock) by Apollo Investments. China is controlling an ever increasing portion of mining and production. Having gone so far as producing items not subject to tariffs, exporting then remelting for other uses. Big downside is I sold Howmet around $41/share which has tripled in value and is currently thought to be undervalued by 29%. (Dang). As far as cheap electricity goes, Iceland is sitting on much more than a gold mine. When it's glaciers melt sea level will rise 30+ feet I think. Millions of years ago about 40% of Texas was in the gulf.

All true but our trade deficit with Canada has doubled in the past 4 years to 45 billion dollars. Thats not Canadas fault that’s our fault.
The trade deficit with Canada comes from energy that we import (oil, natural gas, electricity) which amounted to $170 billion last year.

Instead of violating the USMCA, Trump could have just renegotiated the terms to make it more favorable to the US. It was up for renewal in 2026. Instead for some reason I don't understand, he used the bludgeon of 25% tariffs and started a trade war which will increase inflation, raise gas prices, and could possible ignite a recession.

Has Ford stopped shipping from their Mexico factories? My Maverick ordered in September was finished being built on 1/17 and was shown as awaiting shipping per Fords Order Tracking site. Now it is just showing as order confirmed with no shipping date. Seems like I need to find an alternative vehicle to buy.

I believe there is a shortage of empty auto rail cars.

Well I am astounded at the number of folks on here who have no realization nor understanding of how the tariffs will affect them personally, As a Canadian who has in the hundreds of very dear US friends from my work and vacation travels over the years I am well aware of what will happen if this really goes very far. I know the majority on here understand but there are a small number who have no clue. No political affiliation implied or intended. ;)

They do not need to use rail cars to get the vehicles to Southern AZ where I live. I will go down and watch I-10 on Wednesday to see if car carriers are still coming up from MX. There had been a relatively constant flow of Mavericks and Bronco Sports on car carriers on the I-10.

I am in the same boat, not sure if it will get past the tariffs, hoping but not sure. I will patiently wait, see if the price is affected and the dealer voids the contract with their loophole.

I think it’s important to also understand that a fifty billion dollar trade deficit is nothing when overall trade is approximately one trillion dollars a year between the two countries. That’s almost a perfect split, despite the fact that Canada has a tenth of the population of the United States.

Put another way, difference in population means that per capita, each individual Canadian imports $10 of US goods for each dollar an individual American imports from them.

This will have far-reaching effects well beyond cars and gas. It’s beyond stupid that we’re in this mess at all.

I saw on here a lot of posts about the upcoming tariffs, and I just wanted to mention that while all the posts I read exclusively mentioned the Mavericks Mexican involvement, I also wanted to tell everyone that Canada is definitely involved as well.

I work at Arconic in Davenport, IA. We make the aluminum alloys for all the Ford bodies and frames. I can tell you, without hesitation, that 90+% of all our raw or "prime" aluminum originates in Canada. I have unloaded thousands of tons from railcars myself. No raw aluminum=no aluminum alloys. We do a fair bit of recycling/reusing but at best thats 76%, and thats not perpetually sustainable. We need millions of tons a month of prime aluminum.

So, with the vehicle being assembled in Mexico, with aluminum sourced from Canada, it could be, functionally, a 50% tariff.

Not trying to be political. I am stating provable facts. Not solutions.
So are the body panels on the maverick aluminum? I have a very small nick near the tail light. If aluminum I won't worry. If steel I need to protect from rust.

The hood is aluminum, the other body panels are steel. A lot of other parts are aluminum though, like the control arms. The engine block and the oil pan are aluminum.
