A few posts have suggested the tariffs have been postponed to March 1. That appears to be untrue: Although you never know what tomorrow might bring....
*****************************************************
Reuters reported earlier on Friday that the White House would push off tariff implementation on China, Mexico and Canada until March 1 — leaving a window for negotiation that could kill the plan altogether.

  • "I saw that report and it is false," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said during a press briefing.
****************************************************
A few posts have suggested Ford and other automobile manufacturers would just eat the tariff leaving prices little affected:

IDK why anyone would engage in such wishful thinking. Has anyone looked at Ford's financial reports or own Ford stock? They are losing money on every battery powered vehicle they make.. Ford HAS TO make $$ on their gas powered vehicles. Some talk about competition.... what is the Ford Maverick's competition? What other small truck is out there - especially a hybrid?

On this forum - at least from my reading - the Ranger is the most common alternative. 55% of the parts for the Ford Ranger are made in Mexico or Canada. So it's price is going up too. But what would Ford care if the tariff caused people to buy a Ranger instead? The Maverick's only real competition is the Hyundai Santa Cruz. Which is 70% American made. But the Santa Cruz is already thousands more. For me - if the Maverick and Santa Cruz had been the same price - I'd have still chosen the Maverick. Looks like a truck and I wanted a hybrid.

So yeah. IMHO living in a dream world if you think Ford can just take 25% haircut on the price of the Maverick..... which is already one of the least expensive vehicles. The tariff is gonna be passed on.

Assuming.... as I said in my first post....the tariffs are still in place say a month from now. I'm still skeptical of that.

The last time I checked this was a FORD Maverick forum. GM & RAM don't concern me. I work for a company that builds frames for FORD trucks and I've owned more than a half dozen FORD trucks.

It would appear that my 8th FORD truck, an 2025 Maverick Lariat hybrid AWD likely slid in just under the 25% tariff and will be ready to pick up within weeks. I'm very excited!

I've heard some weird stuff on here like FORD should build the Maverick here in the US after they accepted all that taxpayer money. That's B.S. as FORD was the only US auto maker that didn't come crawling to Uncle Sam for a handout. FORD did however, like all auto makers, negotiate concessions from the unions to help it survive.

Manufacturers are focused on profits and when the NAFTA agreements were signed many years ago, that opened the duty-free corridor for Canada and Mexico to be locations that allowed more profit due to lower production costs with no import tariffs.

I'm looking forward to adding accessories to my Maverick and driving it around. I would be excited for my employer to bring in some Maverick components to our plant and I would prefer the trucks were built in the US. I don't forsee this change happening though.

Moving forward, I'll have to become more aware of the country of origin of what I buy.

"Raw Aluminum " OK. But crude aluminum is sourced from bauxite ore. And that does not come from Canada. Maybe other locations will be developed to process the ore into raw metal. Who knows but why is Canada unique here in processing ore into useable metal form ?
It requires an abundance of cheap electrical power to process bauxite in an arc furnace and produce aluminum metal.

A good and timely reminder that Ford was the only US automaker that has not needed a bail out of some type.

As for country of origin, that is pretty tough. You have to dig. Right now the pick up truck with the most percent of American content is the Honda Ridgeline (70%). Even Tesla's (ugly) Cybertruck is lower at 65%. Ford's trucks are way down the list of American content

My 2022 F-350 has a greater than 75% US made parts content and was assembled an hour away from my home in KY. In order to qualify for an made in US label, a vehicle has to have at least 75% US content.

Don't think so. When the US made their first air strike at the start of the Iraqi war, the prices for gasoline at the pump went up $1 to 1.5 per gallon before the end of the day.
Gasoline is largely driven by oil futures. If an oil worker stubs his toe in the fields, the future markets raise the expected price of a barrel of oil the next day. However, if that same oil worker discovers a billion barrel oil reserve under is feet, the price does not drop immediately. Maybe a few months or a year. It's like inflation, prices rise quickly, but fall verrrry slowly if it declines.

I think it's awesome that your truck is greater than 75%. But everyone should realize that American Made Index (AMI) INCLUDES parts from Canada. It gets really difficult - in the context of our current topic conversation - to determine just what percentage is only "made in America".

it's kinda humorous to talk about the F-350 in a Maverick truck forum. I ran across a guy in Walmart parking lot last year getting into his F-350. Asked him to let me park my Maverick next to his truck and take a picture. Talk about a "kid brother" photo LOL>

I'm 42 and I still struggle to spell "tariff" on my first try...

Personally, I think the overall effect might be overblown. While the Maverick in particular might be impacted, the combined GDP of Mexico and Canada is only 13% that of the US. We don't actually get that much from them. I'd say the one on China will be the larger impact.

EDIT:
To be clear, I live in an area of the country and had adopted a lifestyle where my impacts are likely to be limited from both of these. Gas down here comes from the Gulf and I don't drive a ton anyway. Plus, most Alabama electric power plants are fueled by American sources. I was thinking about what in my house is even from Mexico or Canada with almost every item that is from either of them being things I could have 100% done without.

Even my adult beverage of choice is from Tennessee.

China's tariffs will be a bigger deal to me, but I have tried to buy American for years as I have gotten tired of the Temu-ing of products.

Curious what you think are the policies Canada needs to change? Serious question.

Im not going to get into that here, let’s just suffice it to say this administration sees that change is needed on Canada and Mexico part. I happen to agree although I’m more surprised by the Canadian Tariff. My expectation is they are addressing trade imbalances. I’m not going to debate it either way.

I do find it interesting how many seem to think we are the only country that applies tariffs. I’m also surprised that nobody seems to see why other countries apply them. Yes there are upsides or nobody would do them. Lots of times tariffs lead to trade deals. Lots of times trade deals are renegotiated. Leverage is used in making deals. I happen to think we have more leverage than China, Canada, or Mexico. I do not think Canada or Mexico can win a trade war with the U.S. but I also understand that both of those two countries need to get good things out of this as well and they will.

One thing I do know is that the U.S. has been taking it in the shorts for a long time now and it’s mostly due to other countries taking advantage of our stupidity. A stronger and smarter America helps everyone, especially Canada and Mexico.

I think you're forgetting Americans too, in who can afford sudden sharp inflation fueled by a trade war. I generally support a harder stance on immigration and reshoring manufacturing, but these are goals that will take many years to realize, and frankly shouldn't even be that divisive politically if done correctly.

The company I work for has an office and subsidiary in Canada that provides critical support a product used by many federal agencies that would take years to replace if it came to that. The thought of doing business with Canada becoming a morass and political minefield instead of easy is frankly shocking.
I agree 100% with what you stated here.🙂

All true but our trade deficit with Canada has doubled in the past 4 years to 45 billion dollars. Thats not Canadas fault that’s our fault.

Has Ford stopped shipping from their Mexico factories? My Maverick ordered in September was finished being built on 1/17 and was shown as awaiting shipping per Fords Order Tracking site. Now it is just showing as order confirmed with no shipping date. Seems like I need to find an alternative vehicle to buy.
