This thread is not intended to post a problem or ask for a solution. I have a 23 Hybrid.

I have read on other post's that the ICE does not power the hybrid going in reverse. The other day I was backing into a parking space and my ICE kicked on while I was in reverse. Only time it has done that to my knowledge.

It was cold and I did have the heat on and I am thinking that is why it started. Maybe there is a way that it runs but does not send power to the FWD transmission while it is in reverse?

Thoughts?

It can't directly mechanically drive in reverse, but it can turn the generator motor which powers the drive motor for reverse.

If the HVB was low, it would also start. (Basically the same thing.)

Yep in reverse the system operates a series hybrid where if necessary the ice engine will run to provide power to the HVB which in turn will spin the electric drive motor in reverse.

Normal.

Engine can start while in reverse for a number of reasons.

While engine torque does not go to the wheels in reverse, as other stated; generated power can. You could drive 500 miles continuously in reverse, if conditions warranted.

The gas engine can come on If the high voltage battery needs to be charged.
Or if you have the heater on and there's not enough waste heat available to heat the cab.
Or the high voltage battery is too cold and needs to be heated.

was it cold outside? the system uses heat from exhaust to warm the hybrid battery

about the exhaust heat used to get the battery to optimum temperature, I must have missed that part
