Agreed, bad design. So question is, being how it's all electronically controlled, why couldn't they make the knob where you could push it down flush with the console and then push it again to pop it back up with the use of a spring? Wouldn't take an extra second. You're welcome Ford.😁
Springs cost money.

i LOVE the dial shifter. No more needing to look to put the car into drive: just swing the dial all the way to the right. Also, taking out the keys without having to put the car into park is awesome

I think it has mostly do do with (a) saving space and (b) allowing the truck to automatically move into Park if you open the door or take your seatbelt off.

I like it because it makes me feel like James Bond.

Drive, spin to the right. Park, spin to the left. Reverse from drive, two clicks to the left. Reverse from park, one click to the right.
For some reason this makes me think of "Bop it, twist it, pull it!"

Or the Cha Cha Slide:
"To the left
Take it back now, y'all
One hop this time
Right foot, let's stomp
Left foot, let's stomp
Cha cha real smooth"

The only useful dial I have is the one on my watch

Uh-Oh! Now you're a bad person like me.

I think if it simply rotated the other direction and had end stops it'd be fine. I like the idea of it being unobtrusive but the execution is poor.
Now that's the kinda watch I can get behind. It looks like something a character in an Indiana Jones film would wear 😆

lol I feel the same way.

I've made a mistake with it a couple times and I do think there is room for improvement, like maybe a more tactile feel and more force required to turn it. I dunno... I like it so whatever.
Agreed,It's not perfect, but I like it overall. Got used to it almost immediately. It beats the shifter on my old Kia Rio that would lock the car into Reverse until you turned it off, and back on again, that's for sure.

Put me in the crowd that loves the dial shifter. Took no time at all for my brain to adapt. I don't even have to look. The only design I like better is a column mounted twist stalk for changing drive modes.

I will say if nothing else, the placement of the gear selector is pretty good imo. Many other gear dials I've seen mount the knob onto the dashboard somewhere, which is far more dangerous imo. The Chrysler Pacifica is the worst offender I've seen, the gear dial is right next to the radio knobs. So it could be a lot worse.

For the OP, there is a solution to rid the dial. If you search the forum, somebody figured out the F150 shifter is nearly plug-n-play electrically with the dial. With some creating cutting of the center console, it is possible to swap out the dial for the F150 pull/push shifter. I don't recall if they needed to make any changes with Forscan or not, however it's been done and actually works. - Hardest part was cutting the plastic in order to physically mount it into place, the shifter itself is still just an electronic switch, just with a slide instead of the rotary dial.

I saved you some time, the article showing what they did is here: https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/forum/threads/f-150-shifter-installed-in-maverick.40708/

If you don't like the dial shifter, you are really going to hate a Tesla shift system. I don't call that a shifter - like the rest of the car, it has been re-configured and if you don't like it, well too bad. And don't get me started on what Tesla has done to the turn signal...

I don't have my Maverick yet, but when I test drove one it was pretty intuitive.

This is how MINI did their electronic shifter:

Ford Maverick I Hate the Stupid Dial Shifter: Now With Poll 1725487631599-wj

To go into drive, you press the button on the side of the shifter and pull back. To go into reverse, press the button and push forward. To put it in park, just press the P button. If you own both a newer MINI and a Maverick (like yours truly), try not mistake the iDrive dial for the shifter and vice-versa.
