I've had my hybrid for a full year now and have been recording my fill up data each tankful. In that time I've put on 23378.4 miles and used 639.975 gallons of gas for an overall 36.5 MPG at an average speed of 41.2 MPH. Over that time I had a few longer trips from NY to MI which had higher speeds than my normal driving.

Calculating the average speed for a tankful allows me to put together a chart like this. I don't recall seeing this done for the Maverick before but I find it interesting!

Good spreadsheet - mine is almost identical. Did one 21 day 7,000 mile trip and stayed at 80 mph for most of the days and MPG dropped to about 35-36.5 mpg. Live in a rolling hills area and have averaged a real 38-41 mpg driving normally....but if I coast down hills that significantly gets me closer to 42-44 mpg.. The two things with the most effect on my mpg are 89 octane fuel and use of cruise control.

87 to 89 octane gained me 2.1 mpg. My best mpg was in Wyoming and Montana...assume it was the gasoline, additives, less ethanol, etc.

I've got another car that has recommended air pressure at 32/35 (front/rear). Also an "optional" setting for 36/40 for "efficiency".

I run the Maverick at 39 psi all four corners vs the "recommended" 35. In my eye the recommended is for optimal ride and braking capability as well as a blend of efficiency. Bumping up to 39 psi should not affect the tire wear pattern appreciably, if anything it should make it better.

We also have a Prius, and in that world the "recommended" (from factory) is 35/33 psi. Most run 42/40.

Assuming the dash reading is reasonably accurate, I, a light foot, Get 45-49 around town. 44-45 at 65. Probably close to 44 over the 4k miles we have on it. Driving a long drive to reach a family member close to passing , at a bit over 70, it dropped to the upper thirties. Average computed range is a little over 600. The range after a fill up calculates to 550+, but once it gets below 1/2 tank, the computed range gradually increases to beyond 600. Totally happy with this truck, one of the little joys in my life. I love the fuel efficiency.

I think that the ambient temperature and frequency of warm up cycles has as much affect on the MPG of a hybrid as does speed over the long run.

I believe you're right. I tracked my fill ups on my previous vehicle for over a decade and when I plotted the MPGs by month, the warmer months always had better fuel economy. It was about a 5 MPG difference if I recall correctly. I'm expecting to see something similar on my Maverick

Interesting stuff. How are you measuring the average MPH?

Based on your spreadsheet, the hybrid's optimal speed for efficiency is right around 40 mph. That certainly seems to be my experience too. Anecdotally, running the climate control seems to reduce efficiency by about 2 mpg.

In my case, running the heater and/or driving over 70 mph seem to reduce MPGs more than anything. But if running the AC, the mileage drop, if any, is negligible.
I get better MPG using cruise+eco mode, than not using cruise. If not using cruise, Slippery mode gives me the best MPG in my Hybrid.

My calculated mileage at fill-up nearly always comes out to around .95 x the vehicle's estimate.

As they say, YMMV. 🙂

Its calculated by dividing the number of miles driven by the number of hours it took to drive them.

Very interesting with the 87 to 89 mid grade I was thinking trying premium next fill up

I've only had my hybrid since Nov and barely have 1000 miles on her. My read out on the dash is 36.9 mpg which I am very happy with. I drive very little in town and most of my trips are around 10 miles each. With a 14 gallon tank, you were running on fumes a few times. I often wonder if I run completely out of gas, will the truck still run on battery power to get me to a station?
