I've learned a few things and did a tips video for it

Excellent tip Rob, if I may add that if you fill on low instead of filling with high pumping pressure you will get a bit more gas in the tank before the click...when pumping on high you have a chance of pumping in more air right along with the gas.

I learned how to drive in Illinois 1974 when it was illegal to pump your own gas there. Freshman year college Arizona 1975 I learned how to pump my own gas as self service pumping was legal there.

In all these years of pumping my own gas I never realized there were different flow settings on the gas pumps. Thanks for the tip!

you're never supposed to "top off", that's been the advice for a couple decades. thanks for the warning though, never hurts to remind people, and a car fire would really suck

Way I remember it, once full one more click of fuel won’t hurt but after that topping off can hurt.
Seems there was talk of that last few squirts of fuel contaminating a charcoal filter. And or drawing trash into a vent somewhere, somehow. Something about screwing up tank ventilation.

This applied to all vehicles, not Hybrid specific.

If "topping off" damages a vehicle, it is a design flaw.

You may still be out of luck.
But it is still a design flaw.

FWIW my 2022 Hybrid once took 16.9 gallons to first click. Is that "automatic" topping off? And why would a customer / owner be responsible in this case?

🤔

You're inability to follow directions isn't a design flaw.

Re read my example.

16.9 gallons went in. Until automatic shutoff.

Not all pumps are the same.
Not all stations are on level ground.

EVAP systems were mandated - as were Stop/Start, airbags, backup cameras, seatbelts, non metal dashboards, etc etc etc.

Most of the mandates are helpful - some of them are stupid. Some of the mandates are “design flaws” from the start?

Start/stop was never mandated.

It was a manufacturer work around to boost MPG.

🤷🏻‍♂️

You’re right - Start/Stop was invented not mandated. My mistake.

Although the mpg targets that WERE mandated led to the invention of start/stop.

Might be the same with EVAP? Not itself mandated but a response to an EPA mandate…

I’m old enough to remember steel dashboards and found the “soft touch” dashboards weird when introduced:)

ugh - you just made me picture like truly soft gel-like material, that you can't even wipe clean.
And use the wrong cleaner - it like melts.
Boy that would be safe!

Our Maverick’s console & armrests are considered “soft touch”. The early non steel dashboards were called “padded”. Never any “gel filled” luckily 😬
