In a perfect world there'd be none of this stuff and we'd do away with all the additional complexity of these systems, electric water pumps, hoses, relays, software...
Sans the software, seemingly you are looking for an EV. Keep in mind that without software there's no safety features, like anti-lock brakes, airbags, collision avoidance, etc....

We hate it in our Edge. You expect to move when you put your foot on the gas but it just sits there for that extra second 'til it starts . . . .if you get 3-4 vehicles in front of you at a short light you ain't making the light. I used FORscan on my wife's Edge to disable it. Besides, 98% of our mileage is highway.

I've always wondered does it save that much gas in regular driving conditions like just normal stop light in a smaller town? I'm sure it helps in heavy city traffic obviously. I also wonder if all the constant restarting bad for the battery, starter, spark plugs etc? I feel like when I get my truck I'll probably turn it off most days. Do you guys use the auto start stop or do you turn yours off?
Not a fan. Upon entry, ignition, door shut, and seat belt, stabbing off that annoyance is part of my pre-departure checklist. Considering the jumper that keeps it off.

I like the concept. In my older vehicles I would turn them off when waiting for a train or at the drive through. But the way it functions is horrible. Pause for a second to check surroundings when shifting from drive to reverse and it shuts down. Similarly pull into a parking space and pause for a second to check positioning.... and it shuts down. Then put it in park... and it starts back up again. So I use the switch to manually control it. Keep it off most of the time and turn it on when needed.

I've never thought about it saving gas; I have considered when it stops we're contributing a little less to the ozone alerts common here as soon as it is warm out (which now seems to be April through December here). In the Explorer starting up from stop is generally smooth and often accelerates faster than I might on my own.

I turn mine off, every time I start it.
That's the main issue with it. It should be a button that once set, remains off (like the brake hold button). If you go and make several stops at different places, you have to remember to push that button several times. We have to resort to installing some eliminator thing or disable with Forscan.
Mine has been disabled with Forscan but it's something I shouldn't have to do.

I am speaking specifically of the start/stop function. Am I fine without any software at all -- heck yeah! I'd be perfectly fine driving a vehicle with the days before computers; no ABS, no air bags... Yes, they are a good thing as far as safety and protection go, but if we didn't have so many stupid people allowed to pilot a motor vehicle most of the tech we have now wouldn't need to be mandated in vehicles.

other than sitting in gridlocked traffic I can't imagine it's amounting to much savings in fuel.

on my hybrid obviously no issue since the engine and starting and stopping during regular driving and I have the electric motor available to get me moving before the engine fires up.

I haven't driven the mav ecoboost but I have noticed on other ICE vehicles this feature can be annoying when you take off. perhaps it just takes some getting used to?
My 22 EB had it. Here in SoCal when you wait in lines, like the gas line at Costco, stop and go freeway etc. it reduces tailpipe pollution. I found the trick to using it was, when the light turns green, slowly move your foot to the accelerator which allows the ICE time to fire up. The one second delay won't inconvenience anyone behind you and it may prevent you from getting T-boned at an intersection.

I HATE it. Nothing like sitting in 90F weather at a stop-light and noticing your A/C is blowing hot air.

Also nothing like finding a tiny gap in fast moving traffic to pull out and having to wait for your car to start up and then surge like it's out of control.

Don't and won't use it. Unneccesary wear on starter, oil pressure up and down.
