can you provide the UPS research? I like to know what car/make they are testing on?
No. I no longer have access to the original study. We had a UPS logistics manager speak to a group of us who were fleet managers many years ago. While the #1 reason for shutting off was safety & security, the data showed that fuel savings was relevant and increased maintenance was nil.

UPS studied the cost of starters from the extra use and compared it to the cost of fuel burnt idling. They found it was cheaper to replace a few extra starters a year than burn the fuel.

Also, these days starters, alternators, batteries, and diesel engines are much better built than in former times, so they start easier and the parts last longer…. while fuel is MUCH more expensive than in times gone by.

I love the Auto Stop/Start.

While I agree on most of what you are saying, but not all parts are equal in term of quality between car makers or their part's manufacturers. Which is why I am curious what UPS was testing, and their sample size. I may have to give ASS another chance.

Several have found that the starters in the EB's is the same model as in other Ford models that do NOT have AS/S setup.

So while you have Toyota on one hand greatly expanding the complexity and expense of many of their systems to do AS/S, you have Ford on the other hand with what appears merely making it happen in software with a few outs merely to get some gas credits.

I think UPS has a little more money than I, so starters etc would be no problem for their FLEET as compared to my 3 vehicles.

They SAVE money by stopping the engines. You do you. You will burn more gas and not save a nickel in repair costs.

That very well would be for a large national fleet such as UPS, i can see where it would add up savings for them. But for me and the miles I drive, maybe a little less that the averages, the cost of the thimbles of gas I would save isn't worth the frustration the dumb ass feature causes me and a large percentage of all the other drivers imo. It will never be active in my vehicles as long as there is a means to disable it, either by pushing the button each time or by buying the auto start/stop eliminator.
To those that like it, good for them, use it by all means. I certainly have no problem with that but I never will. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I completely agree with the different strokes comment. No question. Yet I must ask what is the "frustration the dumb ass feature causes"? I am perplexed as to any possible frustration.

One frustration with auto start/stop for me was having to remember to press the dumb ass button every time I started my truck to turn the dumb ass feature off!

Some love auto start/stop, seat belt nags and the like. Others love Forscan. It's your truck. Leave it OEM or tweak it how you want it. No worries here about what anybody else does with their AS/S.

Ever drive passenger with someone that leaves it on? I cringe and judge the whole ride :)

Hate it. How do I disengage permanently? Any obd type plug in deletes?
I didn’t read every response, so you probably have been told this. Just plug a trailer wiring light check device. When a trailer is plugged in on Ford vehicles Auto Start Stop is disabled. Sorry if this is a repeat.

The initial research was in the 1980s using the vans that were mostly equipped with the Ford 300CID straight six. The sample size was in the thousands.
