I've been driving our beat up minivan for years. So finally, my wife and I decided for my 40th birthday I deserved a truck. I'd owned a truck years ago and was looking forward to having one once again.

Initially I wanted a GMC Sierra Denali. Once I found out how much they ran, I decided maybe a midsize was better. I started my search and settled on the idea of a used Tacoma. I was particularly fond of the tan color they offered. As I started to look for one with the right options and mileage I quickly realized I was going to be in for 35k-40k easily. My wife and I talked and she asked me if I really wanted to spend that much money on a vehicle that gets 20mpg. I reluctantly agreed that maybe it wasn't the best idea.

So now I decided to look for a new car with good gas mileage. I'd started looking at Honda Civics and Toyota Camrys. But once again, when finding a relatively newer one with the right options, the price was still over 30k most of the time. I was pretty deflated. I didn't really want a car, so I was already settling. I definitely didn't want to pay that much while settling.

So now, I decided to look at early 2000s Dakotas. On a whim one not I decided to search for Hybrid Trucks, not knowing if they existed. I come across the Maverick and was like, "What the hell is this? This looks nice!" Then I noticed the price! I could get a brand new vehicle for less than a used car! The wife and I talked about it and I ended up ordering at the deadline on my 40th birthday.

And so now I continue my wait for my 40th birthday present as I'm now closer to my 41st lol

I was looking for a new car, however Ford didn't have anything that I wanted to have and their website has cars and trucks separated. I knew I wasn't willing to pay 50k or more for a F150 or Ranger, so I never bothered to click on trucks on their website.

However, I was car shopping at dealerships and I noticed a smaller truck at Ford, that I haven't seen before. So I stopped by, did a test drive and was like: this is it. I want this . The price is right.

I was researching vehicles that could be towed 4 wheels down behind our motorhome. Checking the Ford Towing Guide to see which models could be towed and came across the Maverick. I had never heard of it before seeing it listed in the towing guide. Sadly, missed out on the MY22 but will be ordering a MY23 in August.

I saw the Ford Authority article about the rumored truck and then saw it online the day it was unveiled. I would've ordered the first day, but I have been trying to get a house and didn't want the hit on my credit before the house. Then when Ford announced in October the hybrid cut-off, I said screw it and put in the reservation. I actually tried doing a reservation a few times in September, but dealer never responded. When they announced the cut-off I ended up calling the dealer and told them to put my order in. Eight months later....no Maverick....and still no house.

I saw a mention of the hybrid Maverick on Tivo Community Forums. It was already too late to order a hybrid and by the time I had read up enough, the EB order banks was closed too. So I had to order a MY23.

Man, this is an old one revived - no activity for almost a year. Good thread and very interesting answers. Saw a review by Car Pro of Hybrid XL, but all I remember was how he hated the steelies.

Found myself using my full sized truck so infrequently after buying an used Prius that I sold it. Month later, after following the Santa Cruz videos as a replacement for both the aged Prius and missing the Truck, saw a video for the hybrid Maverick. The SCruz didn’t wow me, too nice for ranch work, horrible gas mileage and priced too high. Maverick had none of those problems, just a big unknown. I put in my ‘order’ the day the site opened. Then waited to be contacted…. Never happen, so I visit the dealer, web guy and order guy both gone for weeks. Finally hanging on their website I saw they where getting a hybrid suv based on the same C2 platform with nearly identical specs to the Maverick. Loved that SUV drove great, left the Prius in the dust performance wise. Almost bought it. Sold on Fords take on a hybrid I once again asked for the Maverick. This was a month later and they fumbled the online order so badly they couldn’t find it. Not wanting to lose first in line status I pressed the issue. During the time we reached an impasse, $500 down and a 7% markup ( one simple price type stealership ).. was not willing to due either, so balked and walked.
Didn’t give up on the Maverick, found a dealer in a nearby town that sold custom orders at MSRP and required no down. 6 months to the day drove mine home.

I have an old Saturn that is basically working, but there are some issues (for example, no dashboard chime so I've left my lights on so often that a Lithium jump pack is permanently stored in the car). My preferred body style is station wagon, but good luck finding an inexpensive one on the US market. I was in a car search mood when I saw this article on Hack-a-day:

https://hackaday.com/2021/10/12/ford-maverick-welcomes-diy-spirit/

I have a 3D printer, and the DIY friendliness of the Mav encouraged me to look more carefully at it. I've never really been a truck guy. I really don't have any interest in the big pickups that are common on the US streets. But the more I looked into the Mav and thought about the utility of a cargo area without a roof for tall items, the more I was interested. By the time I had decided that I wanted to order a Mav the banks for the '22 were closed. So, I have an order for a '23, and am hoping that my Saturn doesn't finally give up the ghost by the time I can actually get a '24 or '25 custom order. (This is also the first time that I've custom ordered a vehicle with the features that I want instead of taking a vehicle with features that are acceptable from a dealer's lot.)

I've never had a need for a full sized truck. I got along just fine with a '82 Dodge Rampage, then a couple of Dodge Dakotas followed by a really used up Chevy S-10. The truck I traded in for our '22 Maverick was a '04 Chevy Colorado. When I felt the need for a new truck, I knew Ford had brought the Ranger back, so I started looking at prices for the latest Ford Rangers. While on the web site, I spotted a new truck I'd never heard of, so I took a look and liked the idea of the market they seemed to be targeting. The base price starting ten grand less than the Ranger was all it took.

In October 2021, something that I can’t remember now made me want to look around for a truck as I’ve always owned small sedans. I googled cheapest trucks and found the Maverick. The more I read, the more intrigued I was. Called around finding out how to order, but most dealerships wanted $500+ down and I was not needing it enough to do that. Found Mullinax that was only needing $100 so I did it and ordered. Forgot about it after December 2021, came back on here November 2022 only to find out I had to rolllver before cutoff. Never received any updates from dealership so I’ve been tracking on my own.
Hopefully will have my Maverick by next weekend as it’s currently sitting in a train :)

Had heard about the Santa Fe, but it was not on my radar because it could not be obtained with stick shift.

My wife saw a Maverick one day driven by a guy looking in the neighborhood. She fell in love with it and said she was going to have to adapt to use of an automatic. (She thought my days of driving were over because my neuropathy had gotten so bad that I could not longer drive either of our Mazdas, but I can the Tacoma.)

The guy parked at our house and said I could get in it. I loved it, particularly the hybrid mileage. We placed an intent to order but won't be on the order portal until August for a 2023 Maverick Lariat with heated seats (but no Homelink like on our fully equipped Mazda3).
