Anyone have any issues with hot bits underneath? I keep hearing about cherry red cats and things. My other truck is gone and the poor maverick is having to take over some work. Was putting out tubs this morning and wondering if I should have a fire extinguisher

Far less worried about a hybrid. Only turns over ICE a few minutes at a time and the exhaust is at a much lower temperature due to the design of hybrid’s engine.

Red hot cats is old news and only affected certain hybrids in very cold conditions. There has been a software update to fix that issue. There was also a fire safety recall but there weren’t any Mavericks that had a fire from that issue it was preventative. Haven't heard of any other hot lava bits but I’m all ears!

There is a thread somewhere about what to always have for safety kit kind of thing. Lots of people keep a fire extinguisher but it’s mostly for other people/issues and not your own vehicle (i think).

Good I’m always cautious when I’m in dry stuff. I know guys with diesels whose regen has started a field on fire

I'd keep one onboard as part of essentials to keep in your vehicle. Be sure it's rated for Class C fires which includes electrical.

Hybrid cat temp exceeds 1200F, but I think that's the first one...

Driving / parking in dry grass is very different from parking on asphalt. Depends on your location / climate and what type of ground you are parking on. When I did field work, I always carried a shovel which for brush fires is (IMHO) a better solution than a fire extinguisher.

For actual vehicle fires, yeah a fire extinguisher isn't a bad idea. But you have to get on it pretty quickly or that little fire extinguisher isn't going to do much except put you in danger. You only get a few seconds of spray so hit it and run. Or just run...........

Why not? A standard 10BC extinguisher is cheap and fits nicely in the rear door.

Good advice, and yeah, if you find yourself involved in medium to big fire, you should just get the hell away.

Thanks Dad. Remind him to make sure he knows how to use it. Not just the mechanics but where to shoot it.

I'd have one if I drove around in dry grass in any vehicle.

Be Prepared.™

Keep an extinguisher handy. Even if not for your vehicle but a vehicle you drive past. I keep a window hammer in both vehicles but don't intend to drive off any bridges. Still, I'd rather have it because even in an emergency setting on the side of the road, a window hammer might prove useful.
