You don't need to "hold them equal to humans" to know that killing your neighbor's cats is a truly hideous thing to do.
Keep your cat in the house. Once outride loose, they deserve no special consideration.

I have cats (2), I like cats a lot, cats are cool. (Btw I have two dogs as well) However, I do not believe people should allow their cats to roam outdoors. Roaming and feral cats create all kinds of problems in the environment, it is estimated that worldwide, roaming and feral cats kill billions of birds a year... that's a B, BILLIONS. The billions of bird aside, they also kill every other living creature big enough to catch, lizards, frogs, and other critters. I personally believe cats should be regulated just like dogs are; license, shots and they need to be kept indoors. Killing the neighbor's raoming cat is harsh, also, the killing a feral cats is harsh, but in many ways roaming and feral house cats have become vermin. Remember all the songbirds, the lizards, and critters you would see as a kid and you don't see them anymore? One of the big reasons there are fewer and fewer songbirds and other critters is because of roaming and feral house cats.
All of that aside, roaming and feral house cats also impact quality of life (ever find "clay" in the sandbox when you were a kid?) and especially the tomcats, they mark every damn thing they can. And if you really want to have a bad day, leave the windows down on the car, that cat piss smell you think you smell on a hot summer day.. yeah that happened thanks to your local roaming and feral cats. And once it happens no matter how much cleaning and enzymes you use, you will never completely get rid of that smell. Oh you think you have.... then a hot day comes about and you realize that it's not all gone.

Motion detector sprinkler works pretty well.

Yep best humane deterrent ever invented, I've been using them for years to keep deer from eating all our plants, never had one since installing. I don't mind the local cats in our yard, but they stay far away also because of this. Works well on any 2 or 4 legged unwanted. Just put in correct place.

Amazon link to best one I used with sensitivty, day/night/always on and how long to run settings

This will work. Modified for going over a vehicle. I did it to keep a stink ass dog off furniture. Cover hood or roof with a blanket to protect finish. Set a bunch of small mouse traps on it. Cover with a light sheet. Next time cat jumps up on it. No more cat on the car. You need quite a few traps for coverage. Edit. The sheet protects the animal from actually get trapped by the mouse trap.

Here in Fla. Coyotes taking care of cat problem .
Likewise here in New Mexico. I never see cats out and about. Coyotes love kitty cats. Most cat owners know this and are vigilant about keeping their cats indoors.

We just trap them and take to SPCA and use their trap and release program. For about $80 they neuter or spay the cats and give them rabies shot and flea and tick shots and clip the tip of the ear to show animal control that the cat has been fixed. We bring them home and release them right where they were trapped and never see them again.

Same here! Keeps the deer away. I call mine C3PO (tall one painted gold) and R2D2 (short and painted grey and blue). You can set them for night, day, off, or always on. Just remember to bring them in during the winter as a hard freeze will ruin them ;)
