Gorilla lug nuts compared to OEM…

Good day everyone, I was about to swap lug nuts and after removing the first one I compared the two and noticed the difference in their profiles.

I’m now in a quandary as to what to do. I’m sure this swap has been done by members. Any input on this?

Do the gorilla specs indicate conical seat. Should be 60 degrees

Yes, 60 degree seat, but not enough of it.

I found a thread from last year commenting on the same issue. Doesn’t look to have settled on the issue with any follow-up.

There’s been lots of threads in past on lug nuts, search this forum you’ll find them, I seems to recall it can depend on the different wheel styles. Good luck

I can't see what difference it makes. That taper matches the taper on the wheel. I've been using smaller nuts like the ones you show on multiple cars for decades. Matter of fact Tire Rack even supplied that smaller type nut to me when I bought wheels/tire from them. On the truck now. I haven't had one nut loosen. Checked torque twice now.

I replaced the ford lug nuts with Gorilla 61148CX - Black and a set of Gorilla 96641BDX for locking.

I can't see what difference it makes. That taper matches the taper on the wheel. I've been using smaller nuts like the ones you show on multiple cars for decades. Matter of fact Tire Rack even supplied that smaller type nut to me when I bought wheels/tire from them. On the truck now. I haven't had one nut loosen. Checked torque twice now.

A smaller contact patch results in higher pressure exerted on the wheel by the nut. Higher pressure means there's an increased chance of fracture. It's safer to use a nut that's designed for an OE wheel on an OE wheel (In theory, anyway).

Aftermarket wheels are typically designed to use the narrower seat, so they (in theory) would be made to handle higher pressures on that surface.
