Good call as far as changing the oil. Question is why weren't the shavings caught in the oil filter?
Uh, maybe the sediment settled at the bottom of the filter, something caused the bypass valve to open, and the sediment (which, if settled at the bottom of the filter, would be sitting right in front of the bypass valve) made its way "back inside?"

I didn't/still don't get the joke, please enlighten me.
I was an aircraft mechanic and we did oil changes every 50 hours. When you were dealing with a freshly overhauled engine it was not unusual to find a small amount of metal particles as the parts were still getting to know each other. If the owner asked you how the filters looked, you would jokingly say, "I didn't find anything with any part numbers on it." Once the engine had a few more hours on it it would settle down, but you would still cut open the filter cans and open the pleats of the paper element to look carefully for any signs the engine was wearing abnormally. If you found a suspicious amount you might recommend flying another 25 hours and check the new filter for more chips. A couple things could shorten the life of an engine. Cold starts in temperatures below freezing, without using a pre-heater, improper leaning the mixture, rapid cooling when letting down instead of more gentle power reductions and too high of an rpm immediately after start up. One of the worst things you could do it not fly enough. Corrosion would set in and the first thing to go would be your camshaft lobes and lifter faces. Here is what I found during an inspection of this one. A crankshaft ball bearing came apart.

Yup, I felt the same taking delivery of a hybrid this summer. But I needed a vehicle and the value was there.. let's see what happens 🍻🤞

Also, the service writer told you 6-7k on a hybrid?
yes but they want to see it more often, Thus more money in his pocket.

Did my first at 3800 much later than I wanted but that's life. Sent to the lab. nothing unusual for first oil change and early engine use. Did my second change early at 6563 miles sent that to the lab just to see how much(if anything) was still in the engine. Waiting on that report. Blackstone is painstakingly slow with processing. The intervals going forward are every 3k or 6mos. The oil will only go to the lab every other year or so unless I see or smell something in the oil.
I'm in the change your oil more than the recommended camp. Following the motor company's recommendation is valid also. I do not go by the oil life monitor to me that system is as accurate as the gas mileage and tpm senors.

Honestly less than I was thinking it would be
That was just for the engine work which included a kit to upgrade the ball bearings to roller bearings. Much better idea. Removal and reinstallation along with the rest of the annual inspection added another $2 grand or so. This was back in the $50 an hour era.
