I've got almost 8,000 miles on my CG XLT AWD 4K, and I LOVE it!

I recently made a trip from northern Indiana to Nashville Tennessee and back. With the high price of gas, I decided to try some hypermiling on the way down. I zeroed the mpg computer and then did everything I could to minimize fuel burn on the way down. I used Eco mode, accelerated very softly, coasted when I could, didn't go over 57 mph, and tried to avoid coming to a complete stop.

For the 430 mile trip down, I got 42.3 mpg!

Coming back, I zeroed again, and I drove as usual, +/- 5% of the speed limit and accelerated normally (but not like the racer that I usually do for at-home local driving) and for the 420 mile return, I got 35.5 mpg.

Over the first 6,000 miles of driving, which is probably 75% city/country roads and 25% highway, I had averaged 26.5 mpg, and the mpg computer is on its way back down to that average now that I'm back to everyday driving.

I love this truck on a road trip. It's extremely comfortable and so easy to cruise with. And found the back seat is just long enough to sleep on. It's the best vehicle I've ever owned, and I've had a lot over the years.

Frequent Hypermiling would take a few years off of my life with the added stress alone. There's just one option for me...Pedal to the Metal baby!! 🤣

It was kinda weird in that paying so much attention to going easy on the way down actually made the trip go fast in my head. But more than 500 miles and that probably wouldn't have been the case.

I commonly hear from people with that attitude, things like "Man, the price of gas is killing me, I just don't know how long this can keep up for!", and when I answer that how they drive has a HUGE affect on their gas mileage and that's something that they have direct control over, they get quiet.

@Cubican @Cannedtunafishisgood the only BS here could be in using the onboard computer for the mpg number, but it at least serves as a reference point. I get 26.5 mpg average in my daily mix of normal driving, and over the 430 miles to Nashville, I got 42.3 mpg. It's all about the 'hypermiling'.

From the web: "Dedicated hypermilers can achieve 50 percent or better improvement over their vehicles' estimated mpg figures".

My test indicates I got a 41% improvement over the EPA estimate.

Does anyone have info that compares the onboard computer to actual miles/gallons put in the tank?

Very impressive, thanks for sharing!

Would've been curious to see how that compared to the actual calculation (miles/gallons)

The EB's certainly respond dynamically to driver inputs, something I've been blabbing about for years.

I'm not sure why anyone would feel the need to question your claim, I've posted calculated readouts here in the high 30s and I wasn't even hyper-miling and my truck isn't anywhere near being broken in yet considering I still have less than 1,000 miles on it. I also achieved my results with heavier Michelin Defender LTX MS tires on the truck. I guess if @Cubican questions it he can check my post history for a photo. The reason I chose the Ecoboost over the Hybrid is because 95%+ of the driving I do is highway and after renting a hybrid and an ecoboost from Turo to figure out which better fit my needs I thought that the observed minimal difference in highway gas mileage between the two wasn't worth the trade off of not having AWD and 4k towing capability. I live in a major metro area, I walk or ride my bicycle just about everywhere or take the Metro otherwise but if I was doing a majority of around town driving the hybrid probably would have been more appropriate for me.

You might want to do a search on this site for AFE bias. There is some good information there about mpg. Many say the computer is 5 percent too high.

The post you replied to is 2 1/2 years old. That member hasn’t been on the forum for 6 months.

Yeah..... I had a 9 hour drive awhile ago. Told myself I was going to keep it 60-65mph. Couldn't hack it, lasted half an hour. 75-80 is where it wants to be.

You took the effort to hypermile that far and didn't bother to do actual MPG calculations? That's a shame...

that.

When I brought my father's truck here ('98 F-150 triton v8), I keep the speed down for the first 150-200 miles. And then I resume.

I was kind of startled to find that I'd gotten 25 mpg!
