  1. 245/65R17 Tires On The Rear...

3,400 miles now with worn 225/65R17 tires on the front, and new 245/65R17 tires on the rear... the AWD Maverick hasn't missed a beat with the different diameter tires between front and rear. No smells, no sounds, no misbehaving. Average gas mileage has been holding at 26.2 in a mix of city and...
  2. 245/65R17 Tires On The Rear...

I started this thread just over 2 months ago by saying: I'm looking for anyone with real knowledge (not theoretical, or deep opinions without facts) on the reality of using different size tires between the front and back on an AWD Maverick. As I suspected, I didn't get that kind of info... I...
  3. 245/65R17 Tires On The Rear...

So, with the stock 225/65R17 tires at 42 psi, and the new 245/65R17 tires at 32 psi, I'm just 1/8" difference on loaded tire radius. I'm sure most of you will say that my Maverick will break in the next 50 miles tho. it sure drives nice.
  4. 245/65R17 Tires On The Rear...

I'm away from the truck currently, but will check that later today
  5. 245/65R17 Tires On The Rear...

Turns out the difference in diameter between the 2 different sets of tires is measuring out at only 5/8", so it's looking like the risks are reduced quite a bit right there.
  6. 245/65R17 Tires On The Rear...

This thread is moving along exactly as I hoped it wouldn't, but people are people. This article (with info directly form a Ford Engineer that worked on the Maverick AWD system) indicates that the AWD completely decouples the rear end when traction is good...
  7. 245/65R17 Tires On The Rear...

My issue is that I've been around enough different worlds where theory pushers go on and on about things that don't actually manifest as an issue in the real world. I'm not saying that's the situation here, in fact that's the point, I'm looking for someone with actual real-world knowledge of it...
  8. 245/65R17 Tires On The Rear...

I'm at 41,000 miles, and the fronts were worn out, specifically because I didn't rotate at any time. So, when I got the new tires today, they went on the rear, and the original rear tires, with very little wear, are moved to the front. There's been quite a difference in size for the last 5,000...
  9. 245/65R17 Tires On The Rear...

What I specifically want is a wider tire, and planned to get 235/60R17 as they have essentially the same diameter as stock, but tires that size are rare. Michelin has one that's available, but it's expensive and not the tread is like. The tires I got are inexpensive, much wider, the right...
  10. 245/65R17 Tires On The Rear...

All sounds very theoretical to me
  11. 245/65R17 Tires On The Rear...

I'm looking for anyone with real knowledge (not theoretical, or deep opinions without facts) on the reality of using different size tires between the front and back on an AWD Maverick. I have the stock 225/65R17 tires on the front, and just today had Mastercraft Stratus AP 245/65R17 tires...
  12. 4,540 miles in 4 days of driving...

My longest day on this trip was 1,296 miles, but it was all part of a mission for me, so it was fairly easy to push myself beyond reason. And my wife used to call my HHR Panel a Hillbilly Hot Rod : )
  13. 4,540 miles in 4 days of driving...

You gotta stop stopping to keep up with me! And here's my bug collection after pulling into the drive at home. It had been about 2,000 miles since the last rain that had washed them off. I grabbed the hose and a sponge first thing and cleaned them off... the Maverick had earned some love : )
  14. 4,540 miles in 4 days of driving...

I wouldn't have thought I could pull this trip off as easily as I did, especially at 62, but it was like a mission to me, and that changes everything. Plus, the Maverick is just the right vehicle for such a trip.
  15. Does anyone else experience stiff legs walking after driving Maverick a couple hours?

I'm 62 and just 4,540 miles in my AWD XLT in 4 days of driving (over a 7-1/2 day trip) with my longest day at 1,296 miles, and honestly the seat is perfect for me. I use cruise control most of the time, and stretch my legs once in a while, but I found the Mav to be perfectly comfortable. I...
  16. 4,540 miles in 4 days of driving...

The airplane looks like a PA-11. Great later version of the Cub. I restored a Super Cub 6 years ago for a half brother I have who lives in California. It took 13 months of full time work that I did in Indiana.
  17. 4,540 miles in 4 days of driving...

The Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum is definitely a great stop. The Spruce Goose alone is worth the visit, but they also have a fantastic SR-71 Blackbird display. And of course lots of other aircraft to see as well : )
  18. 4,540 miles in 4 days of driving...

Very cool you had a Panel HHR too. I told many people that it didn't seem extra comfy to drive around town, but for some reason it was really non-fatiguing for crazy long drives. I put almost 190,000 miles on the HHR, but a semi spun me out in the rain at night and it seemed like the ole girl...
  19. 4,540 miles in 4 days of driving...

I'm 5-11 and if I bend my knees it's not bad laying on the back seat. It helps to have a bad case of white line fever, 'cause then you don't really care how comfortable it is. Seriously tho, I think it's fine... but then again, I think it's fine to pee in a bottle at 75 mph : ) I was over in...
  20. 4,540 miles in 4 days of driving...

(Btw, admin, I HATE it when you move a relevant post like this to a section that gets little attention. If I wanted it in TRIPS I would have put it there. It's not about the trip, it's about how great of a roadtrip vehicle the Maverick is) I made a quick trip from northern Indiana where I live...
