Of interest my atmospheric heat pump has electric auxiliary heat as do most (it is a newer design but not ultra efficient but will operate down below 40°F). It is one that prefers constant air movement to maintain air temp. My wife prefers probably because she grew up pre energy efficient equipment the winter night time temp set at 65°F and daytime set to 72. This makes setting the thermostat a real PITA in that at 6:15 the thermostat is programmed to initiate 67° followed by 69°F at 6:27 then 71°F at 6:39 then 72°F at 6:45! This Staggered setting changes is necessary to prevent or minimize the use of the less energy efficient resistance heating element in that a 3°F thermostat set temp difference to the room temp of 3°F will cause the resistance heat to be initiated. (It's not easy to be a cheapskate!)It's because you are not creating heat. You are moving any heat that is outside of the home to the inside of the home. Some heat pumps do have electric heaters as they dont work so well below 40 degrees. Electric resistance heaters are 100 percent that does not mean it is free..
