You all are too young. :) You haven't lived until you drive a manual transmission with the shifter on the steering column (aka "Three-on-the-Tree").
The Chevy Nova and the Ford Fairmont
I remember those! Cars being in my family! Good memories!

Had a friend with a 53 ford. He was left handed so he flipped the shift to the left side of the column so the pattern was upside down. He was weird anyway

I am not a fan of the rotary shift (2025 XLT AWD hybrid) and am still trying to get used to it after more than 4,100 miles in my gobuggy. I will adjust ... overall I really like my Maverick. But I remain annoyed with the rotary shift and having to use the touchscreen for most things. I think both the shift and touchscreen are examples where the beancounters won out (cheaped out ...) over common sense, time-tested engineering solutions. And I sometimes catch myself at times going to push the radio on-off button instead of the start/off button ... that's probably more of a placement issue than anything else.
One thing I LOVE about the rotary shifter is that it protects me against me. I remember a couple of years ago when I was visiting my aunt who had been very sick. When I saw her walking outside with her daughter, I got so excited that I turned my car off and jumped out without putting it in park. And my focus rolled into my cousin's MERCEDES, causing a minor scratch that cost me about 1,000 or so. At the time I thought it was something that could be buffed out. So I agreed to pay out of pocket. Boy was I wrong,. Thankfully, she let me pay in installments. Anyway, that will NEVER happen with my Maverick because when it's shut off. It automatically goes into Park,. Even if the car is running, if the door opens with the seat belt unbuckled, it automatically goes into Park and the parking brake engages. Some nanny actions are overkill. But that is one Nanny action that I completely appreciate

I love it. I came from a 1991 Nissan Pathfinder and thought I would never like it - but I was wrong..

And that is exactly why I'm wondering if it started with hybrids and people getting out forgetting it was running in drive - too quiet, maybe no pedestrian noise then.

So after some lawsuits wasting money perhaps - engineers figured fine - we'll put it into park ourselves if the drivers pulls a move - can't move a physical lever, but we can spin this...

Now everyone that hates it is the winner of consequences of others.

Do plastic bags still have a warning to not put over your head?

I don't care for it going into Park when opening the door in Drive or Neutral when running. When I want to see if I'm lined up with the marks on the driveway when I put Tire Shine on before. I know it's for safety reasons but I don't like it.

Not a big fan. I miss the old vertical post in my Escape. Good place to rest my hand.
Also, if the sun is shining on the dial, you can't see hat gear you're in unless you look up at the dash.

I don't care for many of the nanny functions. I have yet to try that e-brake, will that grab at speed or is it just for parking?

I used to do that all the time with my first automatic. Instead of putting it in gear as I was rolling to a stop I'd put it into Neutral. But, it wouldn't let me turn the key all the way off and I'd run the battery down.

Applying the Electric Parking Brake in an Emergency

You can use the electric parking brake to slow or stop your vehicle in an emergency.
Pull the switch up and hold it.
The red warning lamp illuminates, a tone sounds and the stoplamps turn on when you use the electric parking brake in an emergency.
The electric parking brake continues to slow your vehicle down unless you release the switch.
Note: Do not apply the electric parking brake when your vehicle is moving, except in an emergency. If you repeatedly use the electric parking brake to slow or stop your vehicle, you could cause damage to the brake system.

My 2023 Ford Explorer Timberline would engage the parking brake whenever you put it in park....my Maverick only does that when I park on an incline.

The dial shifter is almost immediate with the HF55 where as I felt there was a pretty decent delay with the 8F35 especially when attempting to come to a stop moving forward and go into reverse. There seemed to be a delay of 1-2 seconds.

Now it is almost immediate and I like the space saving of the rotary dial.

Sure doesn't beat the manual lever brake.

I love rotary shifters. Only problem I have is sometimes I'll turn it left for reverse, cause I drove a Kia Niro for 3 years previous and left and R, right was D lol
