2 clicks. Always 2 clicks. Unless its obvious that the pump is malfunctioning. Which is rare, but if you have a tank near E and it shuts off at 7 gallons, then there's something wrong with the pump nizzle. Continue filling at a lower speed.

Sometimes, high speed pumps that fill too fast will cause premature shut-off. Best to slow it down and take another shot at it. :)

I never top off, but I will tell everyone, don't fill up with the engine running. The trip computer and fuel level will go funky for about a hundred miles or so.
I think you're supposed to shut the engine off when refueling. And don't smoke (though back in the 80s when smoking was very common, we'd get customers that would pump their gas with a cigarette hanging out of their mouth from time to time. Thankfully, gas vapors are 'slightly' heavier than air.

But if you don't top off you're in danger of running Out.
Brings back memory of soon after being married in 1970 of waking up in passenger seat and wife driving 90+ on fresh snow in flat eastern Colorado prairie with telephone poles looking like picket fence, I said "why are you going so fast?"! Then thinking "How do I answer this?" When she replies "I have to get to gas station before I run out of gas!!!".

My mom in the past would top off. She stopped when she got a new car and after topping off a few times filled the vent lines with gasoline and the car had to go to the dealer to get fixed. The vent line goes from high up on the top of the gas tank down to the chasse, runs to the engine compartment then back up to a vent system to keep dirt, water from getting in the vent and in to the tank. Well the vent line was full of fuel and both ends are higher points compared to the middle so it would not drain out and the line needed to be disassembled and drained.
I bought a chev van once for $300 that would need a couple quarts of trans fluid every mile or so. Also it would only go 18-20 mph. The guy owed me $300 and that's all he had left as he was moving out of his house. I wound up driving it for six or seven years. The bolts on trans were finger tight and gasket was still ok. The MPH problem was harder to find. It was one that had the fuel filter at the carburator and someone when they changed it twisted the metal fuel line about 1.5 turns and that's all the gas that could get through to the carb. 👍👍

While I certainly believe that over filling your gas tank can be bad I do believe that you need to have your head examined if you are using the Daily Dot as a good source of information.

They have similar warnings for the hybrid but below is the warnings from Ford on owners manual non hybrid.

https://www.fordservicecontent.com/...A&div=f&vFilteringEnabled=False&buildtype=web

FYI the way I read this is the damage and possible fire or explosion from it. Just wondered in 50 years you picked up a gas can and went to open it and it spurted fuel because the gas in the can expanded and pressurized. I'm wondering if this is what or why the warnings. Fumes are explosive, where gas is combustible. Then again what do I know, besides the warnings Ford put in the owners manual.

Plenty of warning but specifically look for this one on refueling

▲ WARNING: Stop refueling when the fuel pump nozzle automatically shuts off for the first time. Failure to follow this will fill the expansion space in the fuel tank and could lead to fuel overflowing.
There is also the possibility of damage to the Purge valve... especially if you top the tank.

I have topped off my vehicles for decades, never have had an issue. On the wife's Honda I can add another 2.5-3 gallons after the first click. On the Maverick, up to 2 gallons.

I wouldn't advise anybody to use this idea as A retired Ford mechanic. It well damage the vaper canister because of the gas being forced into the tank is backing up into the canister which is also wasting gas. There is A reason for the auto shut off and that is it.
