I would Get a copy of the communication with the glass people and print it out and put it in the truck .Any reasonable law enforcement officer will see you have done everything possible and I would sincerly doubt you would get a citation

What the heck? You do have a choice to not drive a vehicle that is not fit for purpose. DO NOT drive like this.
No I really don't have a choice. I have to drive a lot for my job and can't just get rides to here and there. I only have one vehicle, so I don't have a choice, now do I?

Yes, that is the plan. But I really think the popo has more to worry about than a cracked windshield.
You'd be surprised to find out that traffic cops often do not have more to worry about than a cracked windshield and a chance to sniff the inside of your vehicle. Think about keeping something in your truck that verifies that you're working on it.

Driving a vehicle unfit for purpose is never an option.
Yes, it is. Especially if it is your only vehicle and you have to drive or you don't eat. Try to get over yourself and look at reality.

UPDATE - Safelite just called to tell me that the windshield has been ordered from the dealer. The dealer has not given them any sort of ETA for delivery so they are taking me off the schedule and will call me when it comes in. In the meantime, I am driving around with a crack in my windshield that runs right across my field of vision.
As far as a citation only a badge heavy law enforcement officer would write you a cite .

Just ask him to remember ( The Spirt Of The Law And The Letter Of The Law. !! )take care .

UPDATE - I contacted the dealer. They told me chipped windshield glass is not covered under warranty as it was a road issue and not one caused by faulty parts or manufacturing process. However, Safelite called and has the part in. So the windshield is set to be replaced on Tuesday.
You thought warranty would cover it? Really?

I'm not sure that a cracked window makes it "unfit for purpose." Ideal, no. But "unfit" seems like a stretch.

In most situations it's likely not an issue, but technically speaking automotive glass is a safety feature. In an compromised state the glass could fail to protect occupants the way it was designed to.

On my road trip I got a chip in my windshield that I had not noticed. When I got home the windshield began to crack. I called my insurance company. They made an appointment for next week. The repair company (Safelite) just sent me an email saying that they may not have a windshield by then due to global glass shortages. The repair had already been set back a week as this is a new vehicle.
We bought the new model civic in 2015. Windshield got busted. Waited months, as all windshields were allocated for production. Could not get aftermarket brand at the time, due to being a new model and the first civic with insulated front glass. Dealer bought the car back from me at same price, as it was not drivable.

Just carry some sort of documentation that shows you are in the middle of the repair process and you will be fine if you get pulled over for it.
