I am now approaching my second oil change (third, really, since I did one at ~2000 miles), and with 15,000 miles on it, I'm concerned about it using oil.

Modern engines just don't use oil and this one is: do these engines, which use an aluminum block, have steel liners, or are they a nikasil coating?

I had a Hyundai Tucson engine fail at only 100,000 miles because of failed Nikasil cylinders, so am a b it concerned.

Have not heard of Nikasil liners, so I expect there are Fe liners cast in at the plant. You might look on wikepedia for more details.

Toyota Prius engines around 2013 had oil consumption issues due to loose tolerance issues on the piston and ring clearance to reduce friction and get better fuel economy . Ours (and many others) started using 1-2 quarts between oil changes at around 90k miles.

I recently watched a video discussing how new engines are more prone to use oil and why the manufacturers say it's ok.

They use low tension rings to help reduce friction. This leads to them not "scraping" the cylinder walls as clean as they used to.

This could be complete crap but in their never ending goal to squeeze every MPG possible it also makes sense to me.

At what rate are you losing oil?

My experience with oil consumption on the DI ford 2.0 has been fantastic. From 175k to 185k in 18 months (hadn't realized it had been that long...) I was still 1/4 of the way up from the "add" mark on the dipstick. Less than a qt for sure.

I had a 2004 Prius (185k miles) and now have a 2015 with 102k miles. Neither one used any oil.

Why worry about it? If it's so bad to concern you, sell your Mav. Oil consumption is not a bad thing as long as it's not an external oil leak. Adding 1-2 quarts in 7500 miles keeps cylinder walls well lubricated so helps lessen wear over time.

Not good: it's used almost a quart in 5000 miles. That is unacceptable.

Yeah. That's high. Maybe what you'd expect from a pretty worn engine.

This engine isn't brand new, right? What have other people been getting?

Yep...I've had it from new, and yes, that is too high for a modern engine.

I'm still trying to find out if it has steel liners, or is a Nikasil bore.

At 90K, I'd be surprised at that much oil consumption: at 15K? No es bien!

My Hyundais, at 200K, didn't use a quart/5000.

Sorry, I was wondering if this is a new engine in general, or has it been used in different models of Fords for a while.

Haven't they been in Fusions, Escape hybrids for a bunch of years?

What was your break-in process like? I read some about being too soft on the engine during this period. Piston ring seating is one of the most important parts of a good break-in. The only way to achieve this is with pressure. That is combustion pressure. When taking delivery I let the car idle until its at regular operation temp. Then drive mildly for the first 50 miles. Then add half throttle pulls for the next 50. Then 3/4 ,then full throttle pulls(Freeway on ramps or such.) So , not abusing the motor but a full exercising within the first 3-400 miles.
