My 2.0 has started getting the odor of crankcase gasses in the cab and it's driving me crazy, trying to figure it out. The only modification I've made, is the addition of a catch can. Before you rush to judgement... All the connections for the catch can are tight and I cannot see/smell it leaking anywhere while running.

Any ideas?
Just drive backwards….if you are train engineer, I know you can 😉

When asked what my job is... People got told "I show up for work and go backwards and forwards!"

Yea, that oil residue is coming from somewhere that’s venting into the engine compartment. You can leave the catch can and hoses in place and just quickly reinstall the original hose, right?

I would try that for a few days and be sure to put something in the catch can hoses to
cap them off and keep them clean. Good luck

While I don’t have my Maverick yet I have run and do run catch cans on all my blown vehicles. They generally incorporate a check valve. My “guess” is that is creating your problem, either the valve is backward or the lines reversed (even though outwardly they look correct). I would suggest pinging the catch can manufacturer. Good luck....

I don't know if you found the problem yet, but I did see there was a fuel tank recall as well. Did you get a SIBL? I think trucks produced from May-October with a SIBL are at risk of the gas tank being drilled through. I heard complaints of smelling fuel as a result. Just a thought.

Since the connections usually break, the catch can instructions advise to slit the OEM hose and just remove it from the connectors. I used my cable tie tool and put two zip ties on the hose. I also cleaned the oily residue off, so I can check it tomorrow. I'll report back.

Mine is all stock without any modifications and approximately 8500 miles, but has been getting same odor for a little while now and I’m unable to find the source and will ask them when getting oil changed next week at the dealership.
UPDATE- dealership was unable to verify my concern with combustion gas odor inside the cab, however whilst in for oil change they did verify my fuel tank recall did have damage & was replaced (I didn’t ask for pictures or anything) but I hadn’t smelled fuel leak (unless that’s what the smell was?) and I also got my radio upgrade (they even replaced the whole display screen)

Do you know why they replaced the whole display? I am going Tuesday for oil change, tire rotation, and asking them to update the damn radio as mine won’t update…. I found your post interesting… I have done nothing to Mav, but notice after driving, that I get an engine oil/gas/combust smell around the fenders/wheel wells, engine bay front area? I can’t find any leaks topside…have yet to remove felt cover and inspect. I will have the dealer do their inspection… but supposedly my tank was checked or not on the recall list even though I have SIBL and born on 10/22 I believe was the date?

Just want to add that on my 2.0 I also get strong exhaust smells after a while driving with the AC on, and especially when I climb in after a remote start. No catch can in mine.

Did you ever solve the gas smell issue? I have had this issue for many months. I have @Buschur catch can and noticed the smell around the time that was installed. I don't think it's the catch can, mostly because David installed it so it should be correct.

I have just ignored the smell up to this point.

Sorry for not updating everyone.. I thought that I had!

What I found, was that the hose connection to the valve cover wasn't nearly tight enough. I ended up getting blowby residue immediately behind that connection. My solution was to use a zip-tie tool and put two zip-ties on the connection. It ended up working perfectly and has ever since.

Note.. Since the connector for the hose is plastic, I never even considered using a metal hose clamp.

It's storming outside right now, or I would go snap a couple of pics for you.

I'd be interested in seeing your fix when you get a chance to share a pic.
