Clunk, Clunk Every Time I Start Moving/Turning

Alright internet mechanics I need some insight. When my Maverick (AWD, EcoBoost 2022, 54,000 miles, FX4) begins moving at a light or stop sign (coming from a stop) will make a clunking sound. Some times its one clunk sometimes its multiple. It sounds like its coming from the wheels. Sounds like the front and/or the back at times. Either way it makes this noise more when I'm turning it seems. I've tried turning off traction control to see if it still makes the noise, it does. I thought maybe it was my CV joints (no lift or lowering). I parked with a full wheel turn, both sides appeared to be in good shape (I'm not a mechanic) but they rubber housings looked good. I didn't see any grease pouring out of them, they looked like a newish part like most of my truck, nothing out of the ordinary. That leads me to think it may be traction control system or AWD system. It does not make any of these sounds while I'm driving at speed so far as I can tell (radio off and listening carefully). Any thoughts or help is appreciated. I'm planning to call the dealership today or tomorrow to look at it but I was hoping to have somewhere to point them as when you say it's making a noise they tend to blow you off or claim they don't hear it.

Probably the RDU. Mine does the same thing. Spoke to the service guy at the dealership and he said the ship date for the backordered units is the end of next month. So likely October before they are available. Nice huh? Mine only lasted 17,500 miles.

Same here, thought it was something loose in storage under the back seat. Just a mild clunk that happens right before coming to a complete stop then again taking off like something rolling around. Hard to pin point the source. 2022 Lariat Eco 47k.

When was the last time you changed your RDU/differential fluid? 50K miles seems to be where sweet spot for it to remind you you haven't done it yet. The recommended change is every 30k miles.

Do you have and use "auto hold"? For me it was the "auto hold" the little hand waving switch. When I engage it after a few days I got this clunk just like your describing. My CV axles were bone dry and wasn't clicking but made the clunk. I have a 23 Tremor with stronger axles. After disengaging the auto hold switch a few days the clunk went away. Hope that helps

I haven't to my knowledge. Sounds like it might be time.

Changed my PTU and RDU fluid at 12k miles. Found both under filled and very dark. They both take such a small amount that it has to be hard on the fluid. Both had debris on the magnetic plugs, but kind of expected due to break in. Good to get the debris out of there early.

Going to do my first RDU drain & fill soon on my 25 EB. Then every 2 years thereafter. Does not help the OP - sorry.

The capacity on the EB RDU is 1.1 quarts. Dealer brought 2 quarts to the counter - but I only bought 1 quart. Figured .1 quart will remain in there even after drain.

The RDU fluid you pictured for your hybrid is the same as my EB. Did 16oz drain out as you pictured? That is only a half quart!

Hopefully the OP’s RDU will live long with the new fluid…

Yes, the amount pictured was factory fill levels. Both were low. I changed the trans fluid too. If I were to do that again, I would just drain about 1/2 quart and refill. Fluid looked great and my only real concern for the trans would be the factory fill level.

I’m ready to go. I’d like to squeeze under without lifting my truck - but I might be too “barrel chested”. Sounds better than too fat tbh.
