Can't raise windshield wipers?

2024 Maverick XLT (owned for 3 weeks) ….. tried to raise the windshield wipers for snow removal…
they don’t raise, the hood overlaps the space. What!? Now what? Didn’t try raising the hood… would hope I wouldn’t have to do that. And how would you change the blades?

I will let someone else verify but you have to turn the car on and then the wipers and when they are at the top turn the car off and then do what you must. This is what the manual says

The wipers will not raise, when they are in the parked position with the hood closed.

It's a dumb design by Ford. 1st vehicle I've owned in 29 years of driving the wipers can't be flipped up. Some bean counter thought it was brilliant.

I mean I don't have any problem lifting them before hitting the hood to clean the windshield or to swipe the blades. But for those of us that live in colder climates in the winter and get snow and ice it's going to be a pain in a dick to try and clean the snow and ice from the lower portion of the cowl.

Ford if you're listening FIX IT!

It's a bad design for real word use, I hate cleaning snow and ice from around my wipers. My guess is this was a design choice for aerodynamics, but boy is it a pain in the ass.

Ok.....so the manual says don't pull them into service position on your own (by literally using your hand to pull the wiper arm across your windshield until it clears the hood).

But I have seen videos of dealers doing exactly that. There are some dealerships who use a "raised wiper arm" as an indication that a vehicle is ready for some next step like being detailed, taking photos, being done with those steps and ready to be put on the lot for sale, etc....

So do it at your own discretion. But It IS possible to just move the wiper arm manually to the service position without turning on the truck. It doesn't seem to break anything.....at least not immediately.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to post the manual directions. Perhaps an unintended consequence is me noticing the "B" setting on the wiper control stalk reads "Intermittent/Auto". I get "intermittent", but "Auto" implies the wipers will operate automatically upon sensing water on the windshield. At least that is how "auto" works on many other vehicles. I haven't yet experienced this on my Lariat, so am I misinterpreting Ford's engineers/manual writers?

You can just take hold of the wiper arm and rotate it about 60 degrees Along the windshield. Both blades will move without much effort. Then pull up and away from the windshield. Done

That's what I've seen too. I know on the little dial I have a couple lines and I have a couple raindrops. So I don't know if you put it on one of the raindrops then it'll wipe according to how much rain. Or if it's just four different speeds. My Guess would be that the setting saying ntermittent or auto wipe means that that position would be for whichever one your vehicle is equipped with.

I rotate them up and lift blades manually all the time.. No problems.

You want to know a dumb design? My 07 Ford Focus to remove rear drums you have to remove the rear axle nut. No wonder when I get my car inspected they never check rear brake drums.

My theory is that the wiper recess was designed primarily as a leaf collection device. Mine sure filled up every day throughout the fall.

Wow, same here too. Not looking forward to all the snow that is going to get in that big ‘crevice’ to clean out so the wipers work.

Some owners have inserted a foam "pool noodle" in that area when snow is forecasted to minimize the accumulation of the white stuff.
I personally don't know how effective it is - or just as importantly, whether or not the foam might freeze to the vehcile surface -
