Wow, they have 95 and 98 octane? Must be for the high performance “Mad Max” vehicles. ( I know that’s Australia, close enough). Diesel cheaper than gasoline, odd.

Octane ratings are different. In the US we use the average of Research and Motor octane, and there they use Research.

Yup, I was just in Nelson skiing nearby. Prices are way up, surprised to see Washington states gas approaching $5 a gallon.

I'm in New Zealand right now. Hold your hats. Gas is $3.20 a liter. That works out to around $12.13 per gallon. That is US gallons and dollars.

Wow, now that is expensive. Thought Germany was already expensive at $ 10.47 (US) a gallon.

Yep, that would definitely stop most people from idling their vehicles unnecessarily!

Kinda makes you think it isn't so bad here in North America, when you see what others around the world are paying for their fuel.

So, I went down a bit of a rabbit hole, to see where NZ is on the government taxes added chart and how they compare to us, The US and Europe.

I knew we have it pretty well off even though many like to snivel about fuel prices and how they are being...abused. this just kinda sorts it out as to who SHOULD be complaining, or not.

Check out where NZ is, where Canada AND USA are and then slide all the way down the list to the UK...

As the page below says, this info is a couple years old but should be still pretty accurate.

I made a math error on my previous post on NZ gas prices. I used NZ dollars instead of US. $4.00 NZ is actually $2.33 US at yesterdays exchange rate. So one US gallon is 3.79 liters times $2.33 US = $8.83 US $ per gallon. Still a lot compared to US prices.

It started in January 2011 from what I can find. It was 15 cents a litre and was later raised to the current 17 cents.

Part of the reason gas in BC is more expensive is that most of it comes from Alberta unrefined,. Not a big deal right? Trouble is that we only have one refinery in southern BC, so most of it gets refined in Washington state, then shipped back.

As for taxes, our politicians here are nuts with their salaries. Greater Vancouver area mayors for example in some cases earn more than the Prime minister. It's nuts, but this is a politics free forum, so I won't go into it.

Not normal hybrids, only EVs, and plug in hybrids.

HOV is for High Occupancy Vehicle (2, 3,n or more occupants). So yes or no depending on having the appropriate count!

They used to allow regular hybrids, but that was deprecated 8-10 years ago, since lots of people are driving hybrids here. I don't think they should allow EVs in the lane either, if that makes you feel any better. Our HOV lanes only require 2 people in the vehicle anyway, so unless you are travelling alone you can use them anyway.

The federal rule/law/condition allowing Hybrid use of HOV lanes with single occupant expired in 2024 or 2025.
