Having white brake squeaking that started at 1000 miles. I do a lot of freeway driving and want to upgrade my brakes. I am mechanically competent but am not familiar with what is best. Do I upgrade, pads, rotors and master cylinder? What brands are best?

any help would be appreciated.

No need to upgrade your master cylinder. Ceramic pads are very durable and create less brake dust but can be noisy. You may want to use a quality semi-metallic pad. You will have more brake dust but better bite with less noise. For rotors, you could utilize drilled or slotted or a combination rotor that is both. These rotors are designed to let gasses escape and they tend to dissapate heat better. However, they can sometimes affect brake feel. As for brands, I like Raybestos, especially their rotors that are coated for rust and corrosion resistance. This can be helpful if you're in the snow belt.

Hope this helps.

I'm going with Mustang MachE GT rotors and Brembo 4 piston calipers up front :)

Some good recommendations so far, but I am wondering what is the big picture behind wanting to upgrade? If you just want "more brakes," that's fine - but when my brakes squeal, I don't immediately turn to "replacing the master cylinder." Are you finding the OEM brakes inadequate in some other way?

How could you claim mechanical competency, but have no idea about auto part quality? That's like saying, I'm a tool and die maker, but I have no idea which inserts to use.

Thank you, I haven’t repaired my own cars in 40 years. I do a lot of freeway driving and make six 500 mile drives per month. I want make sure that my brake systems are safe in capable.

I’ve never upgraded a brake system before, and my question about the master cylinder was just uncertainty over what parts needed to be upgraded if I did an upgrade.

Thank you again

You're good. The OEM brakes as they are will probably serve you fine and not pose any safety or reliability issues.

Upgrades will usually help the absolute stopping power or the resilience to make repeated stops without fade, like on a racetrack. You aren't liable to push either of those extremes, especially on the freeway where the brakes aren't typically used that much.

I've been building my own computers for 20+ years with my last few systems being AMD based. So for probably the last 3 - 4 generations I couldn't tell you what Intel based motherboards and CPUs are good and which to avoid. But if you hand me all Intel based computer components I could still build the computer.

This.

OP - if your OEM brakes are able to lock up your wheels (and they are), you won't get a reduced stopping distance by "upgrading" your brakes. You are limited by your tire grip. If you truly want shorter stopping distances, you should run a high performance and/or wider tire.

In reality, just give yourself enough space to react and stop. If people cut you off because you leave too big a gap - oh well, let them.
Get a dashcam instead and you'll fare better if an accident occurs.

My 2 cents from someone that has driven LA/OC freeways, but thankfully not as a commute.

as Surf said, if they can lock, then rubber is your weak link. I would add that if you want better cold bite and less fade I've gotten improved feel from EBC red stuff on my other vehicle.
