This happened to me twice in my ownership I took delivery February 2022. I’ve definitely noticed it when the Engine was cold.

Even in a warmer climate like Hawaii, when the ICE is cold it’s prone to the shudder. Once I’ve noticed taking off from a complete stop and another I’ve noticed coming to a stop the engine decided to come on. However both occurrences the Temp was at the “C” Level or just slightly above “C”. Seems like once it’s warmed up to the middle it doesn’t do it.

With each occurrence, I let go of the accelerator or brake and re-attempted and it seemed to be okay afterwards.

I’m hoping it can be fixed with a software update. Every hybrid I’ve owned till this one.. once the ignition is keyed the ICE will start to warm the engine up, but the Maverick you can start the ignition and drive a few miles lightly before the engine decides to turn on. Perhaps the drivetrain needs to be a certain temp in order to function correctly? My guess is as good as yours.

Hi there! Will you send us a message with your VIN and your local Ford dealer? I can look into things on my end.

Mine did it once again after running perfectly all summer. It makes me think it has something to do with colder temps. I mentioned it to my dealership back in the spring, and they didn't have any answers. He made a note, and I will talk to them soon because I need an oil change. I believe mine has done it 5 times in total. Last winter I was using higher octane fuel, so in the warmer months I used 87 octane fuel. It sure would be nice to get some answers on this issue because the truck runs great other than this issue.

I strongly believe it’s related with temp, something funky happens to the ICE or somewhere In the drivetrain when stuffs cold.

you know what’s funny, I’ve been driving hybrids for years from different makes. The Maverick is the first hybrid I’ve owned to not start the engine immediately after the ignition is keyed. I’m thinking the SW Remedy is to fire up the engine to warm up to fix it.

I think what you just mentioned makes good sense to me. I made an appointment for my truck on Monday and I also asked the service manager to also look further into this with Ford.

First day starting below freezing and I got it again today. I was just starting to speed up, big shudder tried to start, let off gas, and it stopped. It’s almost instinctual now how to react to it.

I wanted to update everyone that is watching this thread, while at my dealership I asked again about the "Shudder". The service manager found out from Ford that there was a "PCM update" and they would apply this while I was in for general service. He told me to give it a few days and see how that works. I will update this in a week or so. Southwestern Ontario is in a cold spell (1-3°c) right now, so the timing is perfect.

The only big shudder was about 2 weeks ago. Driving in a torrential downpour, when the truck started hydroplaning a bit the Traction Control kicked in and kept the tires from spinning faster. There was a bit of a powertrain reaction but not really a shudder. The TC was just reducing power.

I wanted to make a note here that it has been almost a month and the truck seems to be working much better since the dealership did the update. The ICE seems to work more smoothly while cycling between both units. I also noticed that now the truck starts on the ICE and warms up, which seems very logical. I hope this info helps with the shudder. I will continue to monitor this and if any change occurs then I will report back in.

Big difference! Does the engine kick on every time with ignition?

I noticed yesterday that the ICE didn't start every time because it was +4°c. So the truck must manage this when it's not that cold out.

I experienced another shudder today. @ 13K Miles on the clock and Guys I’m looking into it deeper and I think it’s a normal operation for it to shudder every now and then.

apparently the ford focus/fusions and C-Max having the same issues

Focus is a whole other issue with a different type of transmission that is prone to shudder in ways that are very much neither normal nor okay, that resulted in a class action settlement. It's not related to the concerns in this thread with Mavericks.

I had the shoulder today while braking. That was a first.
