I have a 2022 Eco Lariat with an electric parking brake (EPB). Ford requires(?) that the brake fluid be flushed at 3 years so this may apply to anyone with a 2022. I have tried, unsuccessfully, to use the Brake Maintenance Mode procedure (Hitting the Start Button, Brake, Gas, etc.) to deactivate the system multiple times. On further research I discovered that there is a Special Services Message (SSM51217) from Ford that says some 2022 Mavericks do not respond to this procedure and requires the use of a diagnostic scan tool.

Questions:
Can anyone recommend an inexpensive scan tool to connect to a laptop that will work to deactivate/activate the Brake Maintenance Mode on a 2022 Maverick Eco Lariat with EPB?

E.g.,
Is the OBDlink SX Scan tool an option?
Is the OBDlink EX Scan tool an option?

I work in a parts department at a Ford Dealer, we constantly have to refer to the shop manual for the one time use parts to go with a particular repair.

I pulled this directly from the Ford Workshop Manual

Manual Activation
  1. Turn ignition ON.
    1. Press/push EPB switch while pressing brake pedal to release electronic parking brake.
    1. Release brake pedal and EPB switch.
    1. Hold down accelerator pedal and press the EPB switch.
    1. Continue to hold down accelerator pedal and press and hold the EPB switch.
    • Turn ignition OFF and back ON within 5 seconds.
    • Turn ignition OFF.
    1. Release accelerator pedal and EPB switch.
    1. Turn ignition ON.
*********************

Manual Deactivation
  1. Turn ignition ON.
    1. Press and hold down the accelerator pedal and pull up the EPB switch.
    1. Continue to hold down accelerator pedal and pull up the EPB switch.
    • Firmly press brake pedal and hold for at least 1 second.
    • Release brake pedal.
    • Turn ignition OFF and back ON within 5 seconds.
    • Release the accelerator pedal and EPB switch.

I often flush the brake fluid on my cars that don't have EPB and I'm genuinely curious why you'd have to activate brake service mode in order to do it?

Doesn't service mode only retract the rear caliper pistons so you can fit new pads?

EDIT: it might be needed to deactivate the electric brake booster ... but this would be on hybrids only, and OP has an EcoBoost ... ? 🤔

Ecoboost Lariats w/ACC have the electric brake booster as well.

Forscan Lite (at least on Android) and one of their recommended wireless OBD devices provides these under Service - Procedures.

Just to be clear, once I'm in "brake service mode" I can then do a normal brake flush/bleed procedure on my hybrid? I have the Mityvac MV8500 vacuum bleeder or can do the 2 person pedal pump, etc...
Thanks

It's possible to DIY even without having access to 'maintenance mode'

On my friend's Q7 I unplugged the EPB connectors and used a 9v battery with a short wire lead to retract the rear pistons. Touch the + and - leads to the contacts inside the caliper side of the connector and watch closely - if the pistons don't retract you have to reverse the polarity - but once the wires are placed correctly they'll retract 100%

That Brake Service mode is to release the EPB, so the normal routine of increasing the space for new pads is possible.
Afterwards the EPB can reset itself to the new required distance.
Just like drum you'd back off the adjusting spin wheel, or disc perhaps turn the cylinder in rather than just pressing it in.

I'm not sure why it would be needed for just bleeding the brakes.
Perhaps confirm you don't have the EPB enabled - that I could see blocking normal hydraulic flow.

If you've not looked, it's easy to see while parked with truck off and EPB disabled.
Have someone press the brakes - you'll see the rear calipers move slightly.

Thank you Allen, I tried your steps - which appear to be very similar the steps previously used - and again no success. My vehicle appears to be one of those that does not respond to this procedure.

You don't need to be in brake service mode to do a normal fluid change with a vacuum bleeder on the hybrid. Worth disconnecting the 12v though, will prevent the booster from actuating unexpectedly.

Cheers.

So, you don't know, thanks.
You will need beyond EPB maintenance mode than if not willing to go with it. The mode is enough though.
If not willing to see that just doing it will work (with advice to unplug neg) - then follow the official Service Manual instructions.

If willing to use EPB maintenance mode, here you go.
Again - don't need more than this.

Just use Forscan to bleed brakes:

Just use Forscan to bleed brakes:
I was going to do it using Forscan, downside being I would have wanted to have all four wheels off the ground and wheels off. Too lazy, so used floor jack one at a time the old way with a vac. bleeder. No need to go into brake maintenance mode, and no need to put a charger on the battery to ensure it didn't drop voltage part way through the procedure. Only downside being not having the new fluid through the booster. I am assuming it will cycle through in time, and the old fluid will be mixed with new. Lots of folks don't ever have the fluid changed so I figure a little not flushed this time is no big deal. May do it every couple of years in future.

Cheers.
