Because of the short bed, I anticipate frequently driving with the tailgate down. Has anyone found a picture of the backup display with the tailgate down?
My 2018 F150 is the exact same way. It's not just a Maverick issue.

I can see ford not addressing this issue on our inexpensive Maverick. But, on a F-250 which cost as much as a house they should.

It's the same on every pickup. Chevy, GMC, Ford. They should mount the camera on/or in the tail light, IMHO.

What about those other positions that the tailgate can be in.

View with the tailgate in the 4'x8' plywood position?

View with the tailgate in the partial open position (4'x8' position but cord wrapped around lower post)?
Here are the three positions.

Good idea, maybe a three position hinge mount.
I was think a second camera in the third brake light that could be selected or come on when the tailgate was lowered. If there are large items extending out of the bed you would have a good view.

Or low down , just above the hitch.

That occurred to me also, the engineers must have thought of it, I'm guessing dirt/mud was an issue?
The best bet (if money was not and issue) would be 2 wide angle cameras in the tail lights, the computer could stitch the imagine together easy enough, this would give you an awesome view when backing out of a driveway or parking space.

Actually ,many vehicles have the camera on the license plate frame, why not mount it there. They must have had there reasons.

Thought about that but the plate is offset.

Wouldn't that view be mostly of the bed?

Mounting it there would also mess up the guide lines and distance indicators.

I mean depending on your trailer type and clearance to the tailgate, the camera in that position could help you line up your ball hitch a bit better.. Silver lining I guess.
With a hitch installed in the receiver, the back-up camera recognizes it and adds a dashed line down the center between the two outer back-up guides. Using that, I connect to my trailer ball exactly every time.

Here is what it looks like backing up to my trailer.

Every design team needs a young wiper-snapper who has done nothing and knows everything, and an old-fart who plans to retire at the end of the project, and nobody who suffers from not my idea.

How about a camera that can be adjusted to view angle?... like pan and zoom. Kind of like adjusting your side view mirrors.
