2) If we all think 25-45 Miles from an EV is just about all we need - then why are we sweating so much with other EV's that ONLY go 250 or 500 miles... ( My own range anxiety is that it's a hassle to charge on the road somewhere - If that's really a thing these days )
Because no one wants to have to have an additional vehicle to make a quick 500-1000 mile trip. I've had a C-Max Hybrid (NOT a PHEV) for about 6 years and I love its 500 mile range...with a tank of gas, at 40+ MPG. No range anxiety

Agreed. A generator plus a battery is a great combo for long range trips without owning a 2nd (or 3rd) vehicle, or renting one.

PHEV is the way to go. EV at home, HEV on the road.

I've taken many roadtrips in a 2nd gen Chevy Volt, it's really quite awesome to have the EV + HEV all in one car.

I'm a bit confused on your wording here, we only need 25-45 miles from a PHEV but reasonably need 250+ from an EV because I don't only drive to/from work. A PHEV that does 45 miles covers ~85% of my need with EV, and the other 15% with gas. An EV needs significantly more range with a decent charging speed to satisfy that other 15%. I know ~300 miles with a ~150 kW charge speed is probably my happy place, but could also live with ~250 miles for my use cases.

I understand what you are saying Matt, My thought was a lot of people only have to commute 10 miles and can do the entire trip on a single topped off battery, and still make a trip to the store. Then they park it to charge up again over night. My thought is for some of these folks it's all they need. I think there are still a lot of others who are unrealistically fearful of EV's with only 250 mile range. That got me thinking if the smaller PHEV battery would hold up when deep cycled every day.

I am thinking a third engine option based on gas lid and different tailpipe. Maybe a hyper efficient smaller engine and second battery to regain capacity.
Second as someone pointed out a few pages ago. Increased capacity for towing and testing for van type.
My view is the changes made to electric engines where more power available than the higher end engineering expected ( looking at the clutch plate damper warnings )
I think the picture points to engine changes testing than battery.

Also think other options exists, this looks like an early prototype test mule, they would be better served to tweak out the real world better than EPA results to boost EPA numbers with barely any changes. I.E. throw another battery pack but only use enough to test results. I feel Ford is trying to leverage the better than expected performance and customer demands to greatly offset the Government fleet fuel economy. With an increase of 10-15% Maverick MPG and adding capacity to manufacturing of Mavericks would yeld the biggest payoff company wide.
Thats why I think is a reduction of gas usage versus a buildup on overlapping capacities with models they currently have.

There's likely a good sized buffer at the top and bottom end of the charge % so even 'low charge' isn't truly that low. Similar to how the Maverick Hybrid only really utilizes some 40% of its capacity.

I have 2 thoughts on this - (plug in's - I love them. I love the idea)

1) I wonder if the Plugins deep cycle the HVB enough to wear it out faster than on the traditional hybrid - or even a much larger EV that has a lot more capacity for abuse.

2) If we all think 25-45 Miles from an EV is just about all we need - then why are we sweating so much with other EV's that ONLY go 250 or 500 miles... ( My own range anxiety is that it's a hassle to charge on the road somewhere - If that's really a thing these days )
I can answer #2, Americans have been conditioned to think they need a range of 500 miles. I have a friend who laughed at the Nissan Leaf when it came out for a range of 125 miles. When I explained it to him that early EVs were commuter cars and, on average, 125 miles was more than enough. He started tracking his daily mileage, and four months later, he bought a Nissan Leaf.
Now for highway mileage, as long as the EV can make it to the next charging station safely and doesn't take longer than 30 minutes to charge the batteries fully, Americans won't have a problem.
I don't think Americans want to feel the anxiety of making it to the next charging station on a family vacation, but this is slowly going away.

Can't answer #1

Did anyone ever figure out that the prototype shown does not even say PHEV but rather FHEV? 😅

This is what Maverick buyers will likely think when attempting to take delivery of their 2024 PHEV in 5 years

A plug in hybrid might be nice but before you all jump on it expect a large price increase. Maybe at least 2 to maybe 3 grand MORE (going by price difference on plug in prius verse regular prius) . Not worth it to me. A full EV one expect a price jump into the 40K range. also No you cant charge a EV to full in 30 minutes its always 80 percent. Range drops with cold . Watched many F 150 lightening videos on youtube dropped range by 48 percent . Once guy tried to make it less I just didn't use heat just heated seats. Must not be married. Not an EV fan BUT hybrids are the way to go. Yes exceptions always apply. Oh the Leaf came out with 80 mile range NOW its still 125 on base leaf ad about 8 grand more get 220.

Since most of us wont be getting a MY23 hybrid, I'm guessing I'll be able to order one when the 24MY opens up. Probably be 2-4 grand more. And another year and a half wait.
