Aren’t the OEM Lugs Conical Seat?

I got a cheap set of Sport Edition wheels with the correct bolt pattern and offset to use for winter tires. However, they didn’t come with any lugs. I understand most aftermarket wheels like these are conical seat, and MOST OEM wheels are ball seat. But looking at the OEM lugs on my Mav, they sure LOOK like conical seat. But I see many people here talking about replacing them. What am I missing here? Do I NEED new lugs?

In 50 years of owning DOMESTIC vehicles, not a 1 has ever had ball seat lug nuts. Maybe you're used to Honda/Acura JDM brands?

Mav lugs have a 60deg taper, however you need to match the lug taper to the new wheels beyond the 14mm X 1.5MM stud size. 60deg is pretty common.

30°, or more commonly called "60° conical" seat lugs for all Maverick OEM and all aftermarket Maverick wheels. Only thing is, you may not be able to use the OEM lug nuts with many aftermarket wheels due to the very large "bulged" O.D. of the OEM nuts (they won't fit into counterbores of the new wheel). They make small O.D. splined nuts for those wheels.

Think you mean 60 degrees, right? But you’re saying as long as they physically fit in the holes (and I can still get a socket on them), the OEM lugs SHOULD work.

and that's your definition of "most OEM's"? Getting back to the Ford lug nuts, as mentioned earlier they have a large OD, that may not fit within an aftermarket wheel. Also, they use a 2-piece design, which is subject to corrosion and swelling. So, aftermarket lugnuts may be a good choice.

Well, there are more Euro and Asian OEMs available in the US that all use ball seat than there are American using conical. So…yes?

Simply put, just look at the seat on the new wheels. Naked eye can usually see if they are ball or cone seats. Then use the corresponding lugs. U don’t want to use cone lugs on a ball seated wheel and vice versa. They will get loose fast and u will damage the seat of the wheel.

Yes if they fit, use them. It's a 60° included angle. 30° each side, it all depends on how you want to measure the angle. But yeah, typically they call them "60°".

Geez and I am unhappy that my mave does not have left hand threads on one side to prevent braking from unscrewing a loose lug nut like my 1956 Plymouth. The only problem I had with them was when my son I had not told had a flat and called and said "Dad I cannot unscrew the lug nuts.". Talk about needing a cheater arm to loosen three of those!
